how do i tell what rear end i have?

can i tell by the amount of bolts that hold the third member in? i'm planning on ordering a locker this week but i'm not for sure which rear end is in it.

how do i know for sure though? there has been so much stuff already done to the truck before i had it. when you order them it shows that there is a 4 pinion and a 2 pinion, both of them being 8". what exactly does this mean?

if you a gettign a locker it doesnt matter.... there is no way to tell on the outside case.... if its a 84 toyota 4x4, thats the rear end it had... and unless someone did something like putting in a chevy axle, there is no other one that would have been swapped into it....

i know there has been no welding done around the hanger areas so i doubt that it has any other one in it then. i'll try and get a pic of it in the morning to let you see just to make sure before i order it. do the chevy rear ends have the third member also?

all the rear ends in the 6 lug 4x4 trucks from like 79-95 are all an 8" rear, the only differnce was in 86, they got a little wider due to being the rear for an ifs equipped front..... but the width doesnt matter when selecting a locker, neither does the fact of 4 or 2 pinion and all of them had 30 spline

well i just received my locker but i'm not sure that i got everything i need. did you guys use your old side gears with this kit? i was under the impression that it replaced all the spider gears, including the side gears.

actually the locker matters, between 4 and 2 pinion if you're getting a lockright or other lunchbox locker. the 4 pinion carrier is a split design, while the 2 pinion is a 1 piece

10 bucks says your '84 has a 2 pinion carrier

evidently there is 2 sets for the toyota 8" rear ends. one for the v6 and turbo models and then there is one for the 4 cylinder 4x4 models. the different part numbers are 1620 and 1610. now i just hope that they will let me exchange them.

Are you planning on installing the locker yourself?
