The 2.7 is a great engine and has the record to prove it. When it comes to cruisen down the highway at 75 or climbing the mountains on a muddy old logging road they wont let you down. Keep up with the general matience like, plugs, PCV, air and oil filters and grease and keep it clean. It will last you for many years of fun and work.Every 10,000 miles I like to drain and refill the tranny and all the gear boxes.
When it comes to all the mods and the so called "special" air filters and airbox deck plate mods it's up to you. If you change your air filter with every oil change the special filters are not needed. The deck plate mod will help a little with power if you think you need it.
I love my 2.7 and it has never let me down on or off road. Put it in 4 wheel low and low range and it will climb a wall! Have fun with, Mike

The deckplate mod and a K&N drop in filter will help, I did both and I have been very happy with it. Soon I will be replacing the tube that runs between the air box and the throttle body with something that allows it to flow a bit more smoothly. I figure once this is done I will be getting performance equal to an open air setup like AEM or K&N FIPK but I will have the ability to close it when I go offroad. I don't know what you are running for gears or tires but, while not adding horsepower, regearing to better match your tires will give you a bit better pick up and gas mileage. I know mine feels like crap on 3.58's with 31's...not for to much longer though...

I own a 3.4 and a 2.7..Compared to the 3.4 the 2.7 gets excellent mpg.Becareful when you mod it.You can wind up with worse mpg than you started with.Check you tire press and get rid of all the extra junk you dont need to haul around with you.then check your mpg and see the diff.Jack rabbit starts will eat gas quicker than anything else.Good luck.

junkyard turbo??

Just a thought. im not sure if it will work, but has anyone ever tried to rob a stock turbo off an old supra or celica? They have the same 2.7L motor just with a stock turbo and I know those cars will fly and get pretty decent mileage. Will this work for 4x4 taco? just wondering because it hase to be cheaper from a junkyard than a brand new turbo kit. Let me know.

Do you mind elaborating on that? As far as i know Supra's used 2JZ, 1JZ, and 7MGTE, Celica's also never used anything in the RZ family, the largest of engines in the celica being a 2.2l. Now, some of these engines have similar layouts to the RZ family, specifically the 7MGTE looks amazingly similar from under the hood with intake and exhaust layout, so perhaps a turbo swap from something like that might work, but no RZ came stock in any Celica or Supra. Celica and 4runner's and Tacoma's use to share the 22re, but thats about it.
