Horrific engine noise on decel
Gack! Today, what has slowly been building up over the past week just came to a head. Upon sudden decel, or downshifting, my engine makes an interesting combination of squeal and clatter. The squeal portion sounds similar to a slipping belt but all of the belts are new (6 months old) and tensioned to spec. The clatter is what worries me. It is much more prevalent when the engine is warm. I am unable to reproduce the sound while parked or I would have isolated the sound with a stethoscope...
The alternator and power steering pump have both been recently replaced (belts overtensioned by previous owner). Having the AC on or off makes no difference.
The engine is quiet and smooth on accel, WOT and at SS. It is only on decel that this noise is heard.
Any thoughts? I have ideas but I don't want to lead the witness...

Unknown. 100K miles and I suspect it hasn't been changed. It is one of the things on my to-do list.
Would the trans only get loud under reverse load?

The water pump can get really loud also. After you have it warm disconnect the belt to it and run it a very short distance and see if the noise is still there. Also a new power steering pump can still be a bad a one.

Thanks Beartracker,
I am going to investigate further tonight. It definately isn't the TO bearing. I've heard plenty of those and this is at a different ratio than the engine RPM.

Was their ever a resolution to this? I have a similar problem and a shop is telling me $2000 for either a main bearing replacement or a new engine from Jasper.
To review my situation, which sounds almost identical, on a 1992 Toyota 4 Runner SR5 4x4 with 3.0 litre V6, automatic, powersteering, bottom two hoses on p/s pump plugged, though still leaking p/s fluid, two vacuum lines off passenger side of intake plugged:
Accelerating everything seems smooth and fine. The oil pressure needle moves toward the middle from the left the gradually moves back to the left until it is about the middle of the left most square (around 45 mph). Decelerating the needle moves further to the left and is almost on L at a stop. Decelerating/easing off the gas also reveals the marble like sound, however if I completely let off the gas the noise is gone. Some minor blue smoke on startup. Oil changed and tranny flushed on Monday of this week.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Just wanted to throw this back to the top. I own an 88 22RE. Just had new timing chain, clutch, water pump, O2 sensor all installed by mechanic. I have pretty much all of the exact same symptoms, with the noise occurring on decel and accel. The valves were adjusted, although I do get a puff of blue smoke on start-up.
It's interesting becuase the symptoms are the same as the two others on this thread. Has anyone come to a conclusion or have an idea? The Toyota dealer who put in the 02 sensor just said "I don't know" so I am appealing to the board.
