Hopefully not a red flag
I was looking at a 99 4runner with 180k with the 3.4 motor in it at a dealership last night.
This thing is dry to the bone for everything, no oil leaks, suspension is beautiful, and no knocking from the engine.
But when i turned it over and let it sat there, still nothing wrong. So shut it back off and noticed that on the fan blades there was lines of fresh grease, it want much. It was coming from the clutch fan.
They told me it hasn't been driven for a couple weeks, and i have no idea how long its been sitting there.
But is that normal? And is it a big problem?
Thanks

I'd assume that the fan clutch is bad.
No big deal to take care of, and probably around $ 100.00 for a Toyota replacement.
It could be a big problem if it is not replaced and the truck overheats, so the thing to do would be to use that as a negotiating tool to knock some dollars off the purchase price, or have the dealer fix it before you buy it.
My .02, anyway.
Good Luck !

Could it be a bad o ring or something?
I was able to knock them down from 6999 to 5800. So i don't think i can do more lol, but i will see once i test drive it if it goes away. It wasn't much oil, but i will keep that in mind!

Make up my mind was it grease or oil
Was the oil fresh and clean??
Perhaps if it was oil some got slopped by the yard boy checking or changing the oil.
Hot Oil looks like lots more then is really there

You should check out RockAuto.com for that fan clutch. A few people around here have gotten replacements there and they were made by AISIN, the same OEM manufacturer for Toyota, but were much cheaper than the part straight from the dealer. I have no idea if this still holds true, but you might want to give it a shot.
