I didn't read the whole thread, but is he using a gasoline motor to turn the alternator pully? Scratch that, looks like he has a belt-driven air compressor motor. Dang, it'd be kind of fun to make one just to fool around with it.

I can do both stick and TIG welding with my on-board alternator/welder unit:
Premier Power Welder install
For TIG, I would need to add the torch and shielding gas setup, but it does have the high frequency ripple for starting the arc, that helps in both TIG and stick welding.
