Dextron II is still sold. Some transmissions are not as forgiving as others. If your tranny absolutely requires Dex II, you can use royal purple as a sub.

UV Dye

Any UV light will do but the cordless ones with a small directional beam work best in tight spaces. You need spceial goggles also. Looks like the dye is about $8 for a 4 oz bottle.

Here's another kit for $60.

Hey, thanks for the links Matt. I wonder if you could just get the dye and use a sun lamp instead.

Alright guys, I've got some info for you that came straight from my service guy.

Apparently there is a plug or something that is supposed to go there. After a while it deteriorates and you are left with a little fluid leak. He said to go ahead and plug it up with some silicon and everything will be just fine. So it's not a big problem.

I guess we have some pluggin' to do. And I need to check my fluid level in my t-case. I'm just going to use Dextron III.

Wow, thank you. I didn't expect that. Did you look into ordering the factory plug? Was this a Toyota dealership that you went to?

Yes it was at a Toyota dealership. Prior to asking my service guy, I went to parts and looked at their diagram for the t-case. There is no plug or anything that you can order that goes there.

This sounds a little fishy to me. Why would toyota drill a hole there only to plug it? Why does Trunner have a MUCH worse leak than mtgoat? Why is there no factory plug to order? I'll go out and take a look at mine a little later and see there is a plug there.

That is just what I was going to say. I have talked to some service managers (I won't say where) that didn't really know too much. How much do you trust this guy? I think we need more info. Yes please Robinhood or anyone else see if you have a plug in this hole http://community.webshots.com/photo/...95034847LcLRCr

I would say that mine leaks more because the plug is completely gone. Where others are just partially deteriorated. Just a guess, but I would think that this is correct.

I agree with you guys. I've thought this was fishy ever since I couldn't find a part to go into the hole. All I can tell you is what my service guy told me. He didn't explain why there is a hole there. He did say that it was fine to plug it, that's really all I'm worried about.

I left the pic with my service guy so that he could ask his tech. The tech saw exactly what we have seen. I trust my service guy. I've never had any problems with him and he has always given me a straight story. Even if it means he will be out of money. I can't argue with that.

mt_goat, it looks like yours is leaking much worse than mine. I hope it's not because all of my fluid has leaked out. I'll definitely have to check it before the trip home tomorrow.

Maybe you guys can dig something else up about it. I have never seen it mentioned until my original thread here a little while back.

Later

I looked at mine and it is absolutely bone dry. I couldn't see inside the hole far enough to see if there is a plug or not, but there is no external plug.

One thing I did notice is that this hole is well above the transfer case fill hole which means it's not submerged under the fluid. You should ask this question over on pirate or even call up marlin, those guys have taken apart toy transfer cases before.

Thank you very much for checking that.

I would agree if this was the 5-speed manual transfer case but I am not sure how much experience they have with an automatic? I have heard that Marlin doesn't make a crawler for the automatic. Might be worth a try though. Thanks

Great point, I noticed that too and that is probably why mine only leaks while it is running and the ATF is being circulated. I am wondering if the reason Ted's was pouring out the hole after he filled it up was maybe he overfilled it with fluid? It is possible to over-fill the transfer case if you aren't on level ground when filling or if you hold the fill tube over the hole and sort of dam up the fill hole without letting the excess fluid drain out before putting the fill plug back in. For that mater maybe I over filled mine a little.

I did fill it correctly, maybe a bit too much, but I am talking by an ounce at most. In any case it was not as much flowwing out of the hole when I checked it as much as it was still just flowing off of the transfer case. It had apperently been flowinf well while I drove around the block. When I stopped and looked it was just still running off the case.

I went ahead and cleaned the area with break cleaner and put on a silicone sealent that is resistent to water and heat. I just did this yesterday and wanted it to sit for 24 hours before trying it out. I will let you guys know tomarrow how it worked.

Talking UPDATE

I am a Happy Camper!!!!! All is now well with my transfer case!

I used a silicon based sealent and plugged the hole. No more leaks and everything is back to normal. My gas milage is back up now that I have Dexron back in the transfer case. I will post the extensive Tech Write Up this weekend if I can find the time.
