Hey guys, where's the fuel filter located on my 88 4Runner?

Hey guys, where's the fuel filter located on my 88 4Runner?

My 4Runner has just overnight developed a real lack of power and a bucking miss at lower rpm while driving.
If I step into the throttle and let the rpm rise over 3300, it wakes up and revs and pulls like it should.
Thought I would change the fuel filter first and see if there is any change but can't see where the filter is??
If this doesn't work does anyone have any suggestions?

Seeing as no one else has chimed in yet, here are some suggestions...

Near the rear wheel well on the same side as the fuel door. Look between the chassis/frame rail and the body of your truck. Try and find where the fuel line runs out of the tank.

If it's not in that area, try the front drivers-side wheel well. It may be hidden down in the engine bay, but you need to remove the plastic splash guard from inside the wheel well. You will then be able to see in through the side of the engine bay.

If it is the fuel injected 4 cyl, look under the intake manifold (just above the starter)

Sorry, I forgot to state that it is a V-6 engine.
Somebody told me it is mounted to the firewall, drivers side.
I will look everywhere tonight.

Oh man!:pat:

I have an 87 4 cyl 4runner and was thinking of changing out me fuel filter. I really hope its not near the starter, I heard that is a beast to deal with

I have seen the tech write up for the later models, will my filter look like that one? I should probably know what I'm actually looking for

Mine is on the passenger side of the block right below the intake....It wasn't that hard to get to.....I changed mine some time ago....I was experiencing the same exact problems you were....but it wasn't my fuel filter....Check your ignitor and coil....and all your fuses....

Hmm, yeah, I had my clutch replaced LAST week, and the problem wasn't fixed :cry: :pat:

So what fuses should I look at? When I had my rig in and they fixed the clutch thinking it was causing the surging, I also had them look at the timing chain for wear. I don't know if they should have checked the actual timing as well, but I sure don't know how to.

This sucks!!! There isn't much worse than paying up the and finding out the problem isn't fixed! :cry:

Simple things to check:

Make sure all hoses and vacuum lines are attached.

Check your sparkplug wires for melting, loose on the sparkplugs, and check your distributor cap for wear/loose connections.

Check your throttle body for buildup.

Change your fuel filter. Check the timing. Have the fuel injectors cleaned. I suspect a throttle body cleaning and an injector cleaning will help a lot.

Well, I picked up a bottle of intake cleaner and grabbed and old tooth brush and went to work on the throttle body. I got a ton of black gunk out! I'm not surprised. I had to quit before it was all out becuase it started to rain, and the tooth brush I was using was just a little too short to get in as far as I wanted.

I needed gas so I took it out for a spin after I wiped it down and I can't actually tell any improvement. I got on the hwy to see if I could get my rig to to the "bucking" again, and I can, its not soo bad, but its still there so I don't get it.

I forgot to check all my spark plug wires and such so I might run out there and fiddle but I'm still as clueless as ever how to get this damn problem go to away :cry:
