He means the speedometers and odometers are no longer accurate. There are formulas you plug your new tire size in with and it tells you how far off your speedometer and odometer are.

 

94 3.0 5 speed 31's stock steel wheels i get about 200-220 city. not exactly sure what i get freeway, because every time im goin on the freeway, im goin skiing or at least going over one of the passes. thats with a heavy ass cargo box in the back, not sure how much that affects it though.

 

i dont see how you all get 150-200 miles to the tank. im sure i could go more per tank though... but i always fill up once i get to that last line.

around town here... since i only drive 2-3 miles every time i turn my truck on, i get about 10-12 mpg.. which is about 110 miles/tank. when i jump on the freeway i'll get arond 220-230 miles/tank... about 17-18 mpg.

31 inch tires geared for 225/75/15s

I get about 200 miles to the tank. highway i get about 225, i have 31 inch tires that were originally geared for 27's

 

i have a four cylinder, with high flow cat, and intake and exhaust, stock gears with 33's and i get 190 miles at the most per tank

 

i get 200 with 33s and the 3.slow

 

I've got a 93 with the V6 and 32's and I can get over 300 on the highway

 

I've got a 94 AT with 32's and get around 250 which is 95% city driving.

 

So it looks like 200 miles per tank with 31" tires in not too uncommon. Is there anything I can do to improve that?

 

I have the 3.0L and 33" tires with stock gear ratio and get around 200 miles per tank.

 

i usually get about 220-230 til the light comes on. yesterday, i towed the jet ski to the lake and back and got 245 for a 15 gallon fill up.

oh yeah, have you changed your cap/rotor and wires?

 

Got you all beat, between 400 and 425, too bad that's km not miles, but the bigger number's sound better.

What are your gears set to with the 31" tires? I have a '95 4X4 Auto 4Runner w/ 31's that is only getting 10 mpg. The tires were bought aftermarket by a previous owner...stock size was the P225 and I'm wondering if the gearing was not changed to match the bigger tire.

I know very little about gearing, but I think that changing my gearing could result in better gas mileage.

300 Miles from a 22re with 150K.

 

Stock would be 4.88 for 31's and an auto. You might have something as low as 4.10 but you'd have to decode the number on your door plate to figure it out. I've been getting better mileage since my recent tune up and I put in a K&N this weekend which seems to help at highway speeds with the power I lost going to taller tires.

More than likely you aren't turning enough RPM's and that is forcing the engine to work harder at lower RPMs, and causing you to use a lot more pedal to accelerate. A switch to higher gears will let the RPMs spin easily and you won't be giving it so much fuel to accelerate.

 

200miles on 93 3.0

 

yep wiseguy, victor is right 4.88. i usually run around about 3000-3300 rpm for 70-75. but when i was towing i was going about 4k without the OD, but only going 60 or so. seems like if you drive faster than 80, the windresistance really make the 3.0 guzzle the gas.

 

It seems like I am getting good gas mileage considering what I have.

33's with 5.29 gearing I get between 14 and 17 mpg. Usually around 260 miles per tank. I've checked my speed with my gps and it's right on. I've got 170k on the chassis and 35k on the motor.

 

37's with 5.29's and a lot of wind resistance... my speedo is w/in 5 mph and i get around 220.
