I just went wheelin, and now everytime I gas, my engine makes this whining sound. It gets louder as a I throttle more too.

any suggestions?

 

For something simple, I'd suggest cleaning the engine and making sure that one of the belts is not caked/covered in something that is causing the belt to slip.

 

do you think a slipping belt would cause a whine though?

like it pretty much sounds like an RC car. it sucks!

 

I went wheelnig and when i came back when i'd start up my car at frist there'd be this really loud whining then it'd kinda get softer asi went, but still really super annoyiing. It was the power steering pump bearing...easy fix.

Well, how do you replace it? Mine's been making noise for years...oddly, started after a 4x trip!

 

Mine did that as well; sounds like its coming from the vent area. Whines loud during acceleration. The only way that it lessened was when I detailed the engine, really took some time to clean her down cause she was very dirty from wheeling. I'd really like to know the solution to this problem as well.

 

Does it do it in neutral, or just when you're in motion? Check for vacuum hose leaks. If it was muddy when you went wheeling, crap on the belts might be a possibility.

 

is it simple to clean the belts using the same thing you use to clean the engine bay (in my case: GUNK) Or would that harm the belt? And you would just want to use soap and water?

 

I'll go look in my factory service manual, i'll get it up here tonight or tomorrow.

I'd only use a product specific for cleaning/quieting belts- I heard a story of a guy using WD-40 once, you can imagine the belts didn't grip too well on the pulleys after that. If the noise doesn't go away, its not the belts, but a bearing or some other problem.

 

I'd bet on the bet it will be the bearings. Mine are shot in my powersteering and alternator. Just wait til its cold out one morning, thats when they are the loudest (for me anyway). Of course mine was submerged for a few hours. I have been meaning to replace it with a bigger alternator but haven't gotten around to it as its still going strong. The only thing is that the windows are going up at different speeds, kind of annoying but I can live with it. Could do it over christmas break b/c mr. alternator is only about an hour from me. Hey sellout, how did you just replace the bearing, is it something I could do? or should I leave it to a shop? One shop said I should replace the pump, but I guess I could just start with the bearing?

Seriously, check all the pulleys and belts. Make sure a small pebble didnt get wedged somewhere.

 

It sounds like it's coming from the alternator area, or the fan.

If it's the alternator, what can I do about it? anything besides replace it?

 

Mine was caused by mud, water, ect. I had to get my AC pulley replaced before.

Yep I stay away from deep water crossings. I would never buy a used vehicle that has a snorkle up over the roof either, but that's just me. :chicken:

 

I have heard that it is bad for your power steering pump to hold your wheel at full lock for more that a few seconds too. That's something that you might do when wheeling through a tough spot and not even think about it at the time.

 

You can replace the bearings and brushes. But a rebuilt ones is like$100 I think. Autozone...lifetime waranty.

 

Unless you really enjoy dissassembling and re-assembling your alternator, don't use autozone. I've tried them on more than one vehicle, and rarely do they last a year. I've had one last less than a week before. CRAP! Have your original one rebuilt, that's the best way to do it IMO.
