Help, my engine has a hard time starting!

I have a 2000 4runner with a 3.4

My runner has been having a had time starting lately and I am having a had time figuring out what it is. When I go to turn the engine over when I first get in the car it is dead and it take s a min and a few more cranks for it to turn over.

I have checked the battery and I have a full charge. I have also checked the starter and It is also good. I think it might be a bad connection some where but I don't what to do next to diagnose the problem.

Any and all help would be great. My wife needs the car back together by Monday morning so she can get to work.

Thanks!

Do you mean cranks on the key or does the engine crank over and not fire up?

cranks on the key, the engine does not turn over the first couple of turns with the key.

Do you ever get nothing, or a just click sound when you turn the key?

Whats your battery voltage?

Does the starter seem sluggish at all?

Yes when I first try to turn the motor over I get nothing, then the starter will click once and then it will turn over

Sounds like the contacts on your starter are worn out (the "click" is the tell-tale sign). A lot of people replace the entire starter assy., but it's not necessary in most cases, just the contacts will usually fix the problem. Replacing them is cheap and fairly easy. Do a search and you'll find a lot of info on this.

Yes, except I would buy Toyota OEM parts. Not much more $$, but way better quality than aftermarket brands.

well the dealership was closed by the time I was able to do anything, I did get the parts from the parts store and got the new contacts installed and we are back in business. THANKS to everyone who helped out.

Alright so I got the starter fixed and back in and the car and it started great, then today I went to leave and It wouldn't start!

I don't get any clicking noises but I have power to everything. What is wrong? Is it a bad starter?

HELP!

likely not a bad starter, ...bad starter repair. you have to tighten down the new contacts exactly like the toyota TSB with the right torque and a block of wood in a press. it is far too easy for them to become misaligned.

Check all grounds this is a big issue on all vehicles that runs people in circles ground to battery and Engine. Make sure the contact surface between the starter and engine is clean.
