OK so I have a SR5 2wd 4runner with V6 and auto trans.

I upgraded with spring spacers from cornfed which got me sitting 2.5 inches high in the front and 2 inches higher in the rear ( only about 1 inch higher then then 4wd 4runner sits) I was sitting on 30x9.5 r15 tires when I did the lift upgrade and it made the runner just look funny. Everything was fine at this point, then....

I upgraded to 32x11 r15 (should be sitting about 1 inch higher then before) and now the stupid ABS light is on and the E-Break light comes on when i jump on the gas from a stand still or sometimes just comes on.

1. Have I maxed out the E-Break cable and need to losen it a little?

2. How do I fix the ABS light?

 

you might try disconnecting your battery for 15 minutes or so. I have read/heard that sometimes you need to trick the ECU, it is used to your old tires. Worth a try...

 

the ebrake light is also the warning light for brake failure (usually just a dummy light for low fluid). check the brake fluid.

as for abs, not sure, but that might be related to the brake fluid issue above.

I just checked the brake fluid and it's at the min line. I haven't changed added or changed the fluid since I got the truck 2 years ago. Should I add some in or have the system flushed and add new fluid?

 

not sure as of the year of your vehicle, but it is probably time to flush and refill the brake lines. easy to do, theres a writeup on this site.

Also, get the code pulled for the ABS light. Who ever installed your tires and spacers could've jacked up one of the sensors. The code will tell you which sensor (if that is the problem).

 

when I lifted mine i accidentally ripped out the rear passenger abs sensor wire when wheeling cause it wasn't secured out of the way. pull the code to see which one, its a sensor that was jacked i bet.

 

x3 on the MC fluid level, usually does the trick those things are hearty and if ya haven't changed or added any in two years, might as well flush em out and get new fluid in especially if ya upgraded rubber.

 

I just put more fluid into the system and started the truck and drove it for a few blocks and the ABS light is still on. I went to the local Kragen auto parts and the cheapest code reader was 70 bucks.
Any other options to read the ABS code?

 

Shuck's, Autozone or what ever place will usually pull codes for free, just ask...

 

It's also a good idea to check your brake pads. When they wear down, the reservoir level can go down since the pistons are pushed out.

Filling the reservoir will not turn off the abs light, just the brake light.

X2 on the autozone or krager auto parts store - just ask if they'll pull a code for you, and they should do it for free. Did you try and reset your ECU?

 

Been calling around for shops to see if they would pull the code for me every one either is charging just as much as the code reader or they say it can't be done by anyone other then then dealer or you have to drive the car with the scan tool on to read the correct code. I have never heard that one. Oh and the local Kragen won't pull codes they just sell the code readers. AAMCO said they would do it for 20 bucks so I might take it to them.

I will pull the negitive cable off and reset the ECU before I take it in but I am not sure that will help. This problem has been for a couple of months now and it turns off and on so I know the problem keeps coming up.

 

oddjob, you're right. For some reason, I thought Autozone could pull it, but I just called and they don't have the ABS scanner. I guess your best bet would be AAMCO. Or maybe just get the $70 scanner tool for any future problems with the ABS or CEL.

BUT, the first thing I would do is go back to the people that installed your tires and tell them the problem and that they need to fix it.

 

Yeah, Autozone only can don the CEL codes. But it's FREE.

 

OK so I wanted to make sure that the scan tool I was looking into getting would read the ABS code and this is the reply i got from the Customer service rep. from scantool.net:

Unfortunately we would have no way of knowing whether the module on your specific vehicle is compliant, your vehicle's manufacturer may be able to help. Chances are that it is not, as we have not yet come across a vehicle where this has been implemented.

If this is a functionality that you desire, you may want to look into a company called Auto Enginuity (www.autoenginuity.com). They're scan tools are not as affordable as a regular generic scan tool, but the may be able to help you look into the ABS and SRS systems.

Does anyone know of a Scantool that will read ABS code?

 

or if the OBD-II module is setup to read the ABS codes too?

 

I was looking around for some scanners that would read the ABS code, and the cheapest ones I found were $700 or something like that. Some were even in the $1000-2000 range.

It's probably best to go to a shop that already has a ABS scanner.

 

Damn thats a nice chunk of change for that scan tool!!
