Headlights NOT coming on, not relay problem

Headlights NOT coming on, not relay problem
A couple of days ago, my headlights wouldn't come on unless I pushed the switch forward for high beams which caused only the low beams to come on and without the high beam indicator light. That night when I needed them, that method no longer worked. Now, the only way I can get headlights is to pull back constantly which causes both low and high beams to come on. I've replaced the headlamp relay, light bulbs, and fuses, and none of that has worked. Also, turning my headlights on the normal way only gives me my side marker lights and my tail lights. Does this sound like it could be a switch? Hoping to go home for Christmas and need advice soon!
Thanks,
Frank

call toyota and ask them how much it will cost to fix it..
then go to the parts store an buy some wire, electrical repair kit and switches and just make a new switch.. and compare the price difference.

It does sound like a switch problem to me. I had an issue with my headlights actually cutting off when I would try to use my turn signal. You can go to this site here to find one. http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...?siteid=214074
As far as trying to fix it yourself you will have a headache. I tried to solder my contacts on the switch itself. It would work for a week or so and the same results. After several more tries to fix it I just gave up and ponied up the money to buy the switch. No more problems.

you can always rewire you head lights. or just pay someone to do it for you or just tinker while being outside in the cold until you figure it out..
i think i would be in the truck with the heat running trying to fix it myself.. thats jut me though....

Are you basically talking about running 2 rocker switches? One for low beam, another for high beam? If so it would work but then again it would be simpler to just replace the switch. I enjoy doing electrical diagnosis and even rigging my own wirings but for the sake of simplicity and factory looks I'd go for a factory switch.

Campintruck: Have you or someone else worked on the switch itself? I got to picking my own brain and remembered when I attempted to solder mine the first time I put the contact cover back on with the lever inside in the wrong position. Everything worked backwards. The high beam was the low beam and off was the high beam. Maybe it's unlikely if this is an all of a sudden occurrence but just a thought.

They didn't have one for mine when I asked a friend of mine that worked at autozone. He said it was a dealer only part, the junkyard wanted to sell me the whole steering column so I had to buy it from Toyota. Hopefully they sell them now at parts store. It would definitely be cheaper than what I paid.

they got a pretty detail picture on autozone of the switch so i belive that would do the trick.
if it wont work just ask fo store credit... it will never hur t to ask.. but you gotta haggle with all those part stores.. like your at the flea market..

Well I'll be darned... just looked up the switch at autozone's website and they have one for mine! It's $86.99 for my application. Wished they had that when I bought mine. Just checked toyotapartsales.com for the same switch. They must have gone up because it's now $108.29. I'll have to check my maintenance book and find the receipt because I know I paid less than that. Oh well new recommendation... autozone.

new switch dosn't work!
I took the old switch apart and cleaned all the contacts. But this didn't work. So, I went to autozone to get a new switch. The guy let me hook up the switch w/o buying it. This didn't work either . The funny thing is, this all started after I changed my oil. I wiggled the wires around that are near the filter, but the lights never came on. This is pissing me off. What to do now?

You could check the voltage at the headlight connector.
You should see ~12 volts at the common pin if the relay is working and getting turned on. If the dimmer switch is working/hooked up, you'll see one of the other two pins go to 0 volts (ground) when that light (low or high beam) is on. If none of the connector pins go to ground then there is an issue between the headlight connector and the dimmer/combo switch.

Here is a link to an FSM:

Print out the wiring diagram, get a volt/ohm meter, find the problem! Stop just blindly replacing parts.

I decided to bite the bullet and take my truck to the dealer to see what the problem could be. The mechanic told me that my combination switch is bad ( the whole assembly including the windshield wiper). This is going to run $302.51. Has any anyone changed this out?
