I have not installed XM radio but I sell Sirius satellite radio out of my store. Same idea as XM, just using different satellites. The installation is pretty straight forward if you use the self-contained units with the FM modulator. Just plug your radio antenna into the modulator and wire that to the receiver. Most of the controls just look like an over sized CB microphone. I'll warn you ahead of time that there are a lot of stations to listen to, but the music on each station is just as repetitious as your local stations. We have a system hooked up to play over the PA system in my store and it is better than the local radio stations, but you have to switch stations pretty often so you don't get sick of the play lists. It is a great option for areas that have few or no local radio broadcasts, such as where I live in Maine.

but ive only installed it with an FM modulator. The one i bought works great. it simply takes over a radio station that you set on a little receiver box. default is like 89.7 or something

thats the one i got. i got it for pretty cheap at a local electronics store, but thats a good price on their site! 74 bucks after rebate! i got mine for 175 after the same $75 rebate. the rebate came in pretty quick too.

as for my antenna, i just grabbed one for 60 bucks. its a sony one and pretty small. the wire had to be run thru the track on my rear tailgate window, so it slowed my window down a tad, but i'll live. i should have ordered the glass-mount one online though (they didnt have the glass mount in store)

I bought a Sony headunit about 5 months ago that's XM ready. My question is will I still have to pay the 150 bucks or so that crutchfield is asking for the unit, or do I just have to get the antenna?

 

The XM ready head unit just means it has an extra plug in the back to link it directly to the receiver. You still need the receiver, but shouldn't need the FM modulator. Unfortunately the FM modulator is the only cheap part of the setup.

XM Rules. I have it and would not live without it. In my old 4Runner, I had an Alpine XM Ready head unit. In the 2003 4Runner, I had to get the Alpine FM modulator to get XM back. And since I already had the 6 disc changer from my old system, I am gonna add this as well.

Now, I am sure there may be a little signal loss, (not too sure yet since I haven't installed it in the new runner yet), but I can deal with a little loss vs. listening to all the freaking commercials.

You have to get the antenna with I think is about another 70 bucks. It is pretty small that goes on the roof of the truck. When I originally installed XM in my old runner, both the dealer (HiFi Buys) and XM Customer Service advised me NOT to get the glass mount antenna. So I didn't.
