I'd love to hear what they have to say about that!

Not really though. Since I can already imagine what kind of dumbass BS excuse that would be. If I were you I wouldn't even bother asking. You've suffered enough of their stupidity already.

BTW, it needs replaced ASAP. Running it like that is no bueno.

Why would that ever cause problems? Seriously asking.

Harmonic balancers are "balanced" from the factory. It would now be out of balance. And will cause vibration while spinning. Like any imbalanced rotating mass would.

See the holes drilled to remove weight for balancing? They're there for a reason.

The purpose of a HB is to help remove vibrations from the crankshaft. Not impart vibrations to it.

I'm demanding a new part, whether it's a problem or not. That's just inexcusable.

why would they even put such a part on in the 1st place?

I would never put a broken part on a boat engine

They probably damaged it when the 'mechanic' grabbed his trusty chain whip to hold the pulley instead of retaining it correctly while torquing the crank bolt.

The shop owner called this morning to tell me he has a new harmonic balancer ordered, so I'm hoping for a happy ending.

Well, they did good with the replacement HB, as far as I can tell. I had taped the page out of the service manual on the steering wheel with the torque spec highlighted. Hopefully I'm good for another 100K miles.

Glad to hear they took care of the issue.

As for the timing belt mileage, I had mine replaced for the first time at 170,000 miles. I'm now at 346,000 miles and will replace it (and everything) again soon. Whenever the mood strikes me.
