If you look closely enough you will see just how well the lower crossbar catches any rock that might have the slightest chance of scraping the bottom of your truck....

Don't waste your money. Either keep it stock or get a real front bumper.

They definitely cause more damage. Trust me, I have tested this.

I cannot remember what I used as a reference point, but anything like the mirror, top of the running board, or something like that will work. Dude, it's not hard to do. Don't pay someone to do it. I looked into having someone do it for me, and every car stereo shop that I talked to wouldn't do it for liability reasons. Do it yourself. It's easy. The VWs are great. They are sealed really well, so you don't have to worry about moisture getting in there. The only drawback is that in order to change the bulb (if it blows and mine haven't in a year and a half), you will have to pop a few of those plastic rivets out from inside the tire well and access the bulb from behind. BTW, mine did not come with the Sport logos. I installed them myself.

grille guards are a waste of money. i have one and it blows...it came with my rig, and PIAA driving lights so i just keep it on for that. the only protection it provides is from a basketball. i learned this the hard way...while messing around one day my friends were like, hey see if you can push that tree over with your grille guard...it was a small tree and they bent it so it was pretty soft...well i had plenty of traction, and i dont think horsepower or torque was an issue because all that came out of it was me sitting there and i created a dent in that bottom crossbar from a tree about 6 feet tall and 3 inches in diameter that the roots were really loose. dont get a grille guard, big waste of money, plus if you ever want a winch, you cant put one on a grille guard...the only reason to get a grille guard is for looks, and i think arb/tjm's look better anyways. i heard you can crash those things at 35mph and not a lot of damage. and another thing about the grille guards...the little rubber things that run vertically (theres rubber over the metal/aluminum whatever it is) come off kinda easy, and you can get mud in there easily and its a bi**h to clean out AND your "approach angle" sucks...i dont know how it compares to a arb/tjm though. just my thoughts. heres links to pics of my grille guard (i cant figure how to put pics in here) and if you look close you can see the crossbar dented a little, i have no idea how to get that dent out either!

Yea, I am definitely going TJM or ARB, I saw an article where a guy ran into a deer at 75mph, crushed the TJM a bit, but didn't hurt the truck at all, with the stock bumper, or grille guard, it would have been a whole different story, and I agree with the approach angles with the grille guard too. Just a matter of money now, lol. I guess we can change this thread to both grille guards and good bumpers like TJM and ARB.

I am definitely getting a bumper instead of a grille guard. Why? today i was watching a news story about the ice and snow in ca. They showed footage of a 40 car accident, people couldn't stop or go, so they just kept on rear ending each other in a huge line, one of them was a ford explorer with a grille guard. Guess what, the grille guard went right into the stock bumper, and damaged the hood and broke the headlights. You could see the thing flex into the body.

Hey good luck on that bumper man. My car is very similar to yours and I'll be getting a TJM-T15 at some point. First thing i'll do is go slam a shopping cart.

not a prado, but a sahara. I believe Andy(bamachem) or Brian (waskillyrabbit) have a comparison shot of the sahara and the prado
