I used 16 or so gauge Perforated Metal Sheet I got at a local metal yard. Cost me 3 bucks for a sheet 4 times bigger than I needed. I actually have anough metal, bondo, and paint to do this 2-3 more times. It looks kind of like this:

I like that!
It's very cool looking and also seems like overwhelming protection from rocks and such!
I know a trucker who used to drive the Alcan Hwy (The Alasken Hwy) and he said you were a fool if you didn't put wire about that size infront of your radiators to protect from rocks. (that was in the days when hundreds of miles were unpaved, but still good advice)

So today I learned two things:
1) This thing gets a LOT of bugs in it!
2) That's that many less bugs and rocks in my radiator.
Maybe we could call this an off-road enhnacement instead of a cosmetic mod!

Hey Beau,
I was up at the Escondido metal shop and found the same sheets you got. I'm curious though... how did you go about cutting that stuff up? It's thicker than I thought it would be!
I ended up leaving there without the sheet BUT I didn't leave empty handed!
I picked up 2 of these for $2 each!!!
These are HUGE and excellent for what I have planned for my 1st gen!
I think the dimensions are 17.25 L x 7.25W x 14 D inches.

Awesome Peter! I may have to go over there and look around some more. I used a metal jigsaw for the major cuts and then a pair of wirecutters (and a lot of bending) for the detail stuff. it was...time consuming.
