going topless

Anybody have information on a production rear cover for gen 1's .
The idea is to take the back off and put a tonneau type cover over the cargo area + cover the back side of the cab.
I've seen the Can back canopy and the company that took over Kaylines stuff a little pricey for the kid
See the deal is out here we get heavy heavy rains and I'd like to go topless in the summer months but need to cover the rear quickly due to the navigation and stereo crap in the back.
any info would be great.

Yea those companies are all I've seen. I have also seen jeep bikini tops used for a semi cover. I aint no genious though but in my parts I would never leave navigation and stereo crap just under a rag. Thats what is keeping me from getting subwoofers, the price is keeping me from getting a ragtop.

Just my .02 cents

you might want to go to a boat shop and see about a custom cover... they do good work and will custom suit it too you... i would however look out with the stereo equipment unless you plan on making a securtiy lockbox type like jeeps use....

I`m not really worried about the security as much as I am about a down pour.

OR buy one

www.can-back.com

I could have sworn that All-Pro used to sell can-backs, but I can't find them on their site!

Something I was thinking of which may not totally apply to your situation. I'm looking to be able to convert my 1st gen into an actual, functional truck with the back cab totally covered.

Here are my thoughts:

1) Line the fold down rear seats with bedliner/Rhino liner or something so when laid flat and exposed, water will run off them like the bed would.

2) Fab a rear cab cover out of an 80's Toyota Pickup. Make it so that it would fit onto the open end of the cab of the 1st gen easily and make a rubber fit onto the sides of the bed and the laid down rear seats.

Now, I'm no welder, metal fabber or anything closely related to an auto mechanic. But I wish I was so I could put this idea to the test. If anyone has any free time . . . . hehe.

Just trying to keep the thread and brainstorming flowing.
Regards,

Justin B.

L ks like a trip to the local tent maker ,just to play with the idea.
Wabbit , Johnny did a killer job on that one his rig is one of my fav's over atY/T. did you settle on a color yet?
though I like the can back style I was just tryin to be different
Pine has a good idea but outta the question for me,if I try that the Land Transport boy's would have a field day come registration time.
quick explanation in Japan a vehicle is a certain diminesion/weight/engine type these can be changed but it's gonna cost$$and loads of paper work and time.
So basically I need to do reversible mod's or stay within guide lines set forth by Japan traffic safety offices

pine i don't have any pics but i removed everything from the rear of my 87 runner carpet ,seats ,and roll bar and built a raised platform that thats sits just above the wheel wells which provides space cargo space underneath and up top alot .... once you remove everything you'll see what i mean ...also provides for an instant bed when out camping with out dealing with a tent .
