going to 305s from 285s, fitment?

Hey, I searched a bit for this (to no avail), but just wanted to check to see if anyone had done what I plan to do. I currently am running Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor All Terrains (285/75/16) on 1995 landcruiser rims. I am up 2-3" on 881s and 890s. My current setup works great (no rubs at all once i hammered back the pinch weld). I am looking to go a hair wider for the sand (its a beast already in the sand, but as I frequently help pull people out, a little extra sand "buoyancy" wouldn't be so bad). 305/70/16s seem about perfect. I can currently fit the thickness of my hand between the upper A arm and the sidewall, so I think this will work. I just wanted to see what opinions anyone had, or if anyone had done this. I will be going with BFG ATs next (Although I did love the silent armors). Will I need an inch of Body? I'd prefer an all suspension lift...

guess you can get one mounted up and see if you don't rub your a-arm, or get some shaved a-arms!

yeah, thats true.... I was just hoping someone had a similar setup. 285s just aren't that wide. Thanks for the response

There the same size height wise but the 305 is about an inch wider, so you would have to be sure your backspacing will work

285/75/16 = 32.8x11.2/16
305/70/16 = 32.8x12/16

hell, i think im going to do it. I'm pretty sure I have room with my A arms. My real concern was with the tire hitting the body with the wheel turned under compression. I can't really hammer back anymore. Next time I see a sale, I'll throw some 305s on there.

How did this turn out. I'm looking at 305/70 16 because that's the only 33 available in the tire I want. I will be getting a 2.5" suspension lift (through SS System 1.2).

i run 305's and you need front spacers to clear the a arm, i have 1 in.. you will rub on the fender. pound in the pinch weld and cut the lower corner of the fender. and youll be just fine..

great, thanks for the follow up 4RKidd. Got any photos of your rig? I was concerned w/ the SS 1.2 (2.5" lift) that the 305/70 will not clear w/o serious mods... but it seems like a little trimming, and spacers etc, I can deal with. I want to keep the stock Limited fender flares though... do you think that would post a problem?

I want to get the MT KM2 from BFG, but their sizes are 265, then 305. no 285 offered, ugh. How is the power/mileage, etc. with those 305s?

Thanks again!

Thanks wabbit... though the 305/70 seem to only be 33s (I would prefer 285s, though the KM2 don't come in that size).

I'm going back to 285s from 305s (on now). I have to run 1" spacers in the front and not the rear. If I run spacers on the rear, the wheel wells sit on the last 1" of the tires. W/o the spacers I can just barely stuff the rears w/ a little rubbing - not really that bad, but it still gets old. Fronts only rub on the frame a little when fully turned to one side, nowhere else (after some cutting and pounding).

My $.02, the little extra width you gain isn't worth the rubbing. And yes, the KM2's do come in 285s....look....

Thanks Brian! That's what I get for going to my favorite tire website, rather than directly from BFG-must be Friday fog... since that didn't even cross my mind.

Yep, it'll be the 285s then for me. I just don't really need that extra width. Thanks again!
