to go big, or not to go big
ive got a 3" lift im putting on my otherwise stock '01 tacoma 4wd, im going to buy firestone destination m/t tires... the stock tire is 265 on my truck and i was planning on getting 285's once my lift is installed. the last few days ive been thinking about getting the same tire size so that i save a little on gas. also im getting either ehaust of intake. im so confused

My answer will be pretty biased but here's my 2 cents anyways, heh. I just put a lift on my Runner the other day and next week i'll be installing the Firestone Destination M/T 285's...In my case i'd say go for it, however i dont know how much it'll hurt ur gas mileage. I plan on doin a couple minor mods to my intake in hopes of gaining a little better gas mileage but who knows how much that'll help.
Just make sure you get what you really want cause u'll have your tires for a while...You could even go with the AT's instead of MT's, but i dont know if that'd really help out on your gas mileage or not. Maybe you can find a compromise, such as a tire larger than 225, but smaller than the 285...265 maybe?
Goodluck with your decision.

Based on conversations with ErikJeanna, he lost a ton of power when he lifted his 98 4runner and put on the 285's. He lost so much power that he wants to regear. I would take this to mean that even if you upgrade intake/exhaust, you probably would not make the same power as stock w/ 285's.
I've also PM'd a few people on the boards b/c I will put in my Revtek lift kit in the next couple of weeks and am inquiring about tire sizes. I'm pretty convinced that I will go with 265's b/c I don't want to lose power or have to regear.
Also, I put in a FIPK and plan on putting headers/magnaflow after the lift. Even with this setup, I don't think I'll be getting more than 15-20 horses extra.

i meant that i had 265 on its stock... mybad. the 285's are the net size up, i normally wouldnt care about gas milage but gas prices are so high and only going up, and my lift is only 3" so it wouldnt look that bad. i guess ill have to wait to see what it looks like

Nick, has your tire size or ground clearance held you up yet? Have you got alot of scrapes and dents on your skid plates? I'm kind of coming around to the decision to stick with my 31's and 4:10 gearing. I had wood for 33's and 4:88's but I've realized that right now my limiting factor has been my open diffs. So I think I'm going to stick with my current setup which is stronger and more efficient and spend the dough on a locker and move on to my tired engine with my mod budget. Maybe by the time I get my engine up to speed (haha), I'll have wheeled the 4:10/31/locker setup enough to know if I was right or wrong.
