My 1st Gen does it ALL THE TIME! I just hold it in first when this happens...sometimes the gears grind
But what I noticed helps is holding the clutch ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR for a few seconds before I put it in 1st!

Man!, when I was test driving runners (2nd gen sticks, obviously) a few years ago, many of them did this! A few private owners even admitted to this during a test drive. One guy said it had been doing it for 70,000 of it's 150,000 miles. He said he just developed the habit of hold the lever firmly in gear when accelerating in first. The tranny was smooth and quiet and never did it to me in my 30 min. test drive. My GUESS is weak motor/tranny/rear control arm bushings allowing drivetrain enough flex to knock the shifter out of gear. Oh yeah-if it is grinding alot you may have bigger issues.

Check the throw out bearing in the clutch assembly. An old vehicle of mine had this problem and it ended up being a bad bearing.

I agree with both Reldnew and Sac State. This usually happens as clutch parts/linkage begins to wear.

Happened to us in our 92 Maxima with 178K miles.

I had the same problem with my '92 Toy. It turns out that it is a very common problem with these trucks. Mine would pop out of first and third at the first sign of torque. It is an incredibly easy fix. The parts cost less then $20 and it take about an hour to do. Check out this link for all the directions and part names. http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/shifter/index.html The directions look like they are for your truck exactly. Good luck.

maherj is spot on with his diagnosis. I had the exact same problem with my old '92 and this did the trick.

I dont know if this helps any but I had an 86 toy pu and it was coming out of gear too. I work at a toyota dealership and had one of the techs look at it and there is a little rubber ring under the stick boots that gets worn out some times. the part was like 1 dollar or so and after he put it in it shifted great.

Yota runner, that's the write up from the link. Strange, I have never had it come out of gear under strain, it did once on flat surface, but i don't think I had put it in all the way. Never had a problem in 4WD either.

that rubber thing is called the "shift shaft seat" and is the cause of falling out of gear. available at your local toyota dealer...
