Fixing brakes- Doing the upgrade
So im tired of my brakes being warped and not holding up for very long. So instead of replacing the stock rotors again im just going to do the tundra upgrade with the 199mm. My question is where to get the calipers? Would there be any problems with ordering them from say this web site:
http://www.toyautoparts.com/catalog/...4739+1725+9178
My only hesitation from ordering from there is i hope its not one of those you get what you pay for and $86 for a caliper is a great deal, almost to good? So anyway, what would you do? order from there or go to a junk yard and pull a set off of a wrecked tundra? I want to make sure i do this right the first time cuz i messed up last time and paid $80 for rotors and pads...got what i paid for on that one.
Looky what i got
And they are the big ones

The only thing I see there is there is a core charge, so you will end up paying like 160, then having to ship your cores back to get the 61 refunded. By the time that all works out, you could probably have bought them from Autozone, and saved money. Plus then you can easily return them if it doesn't work out.
EDIT: And since you dont have a tundra, you will not get cores to send back, so really its 160 a caliper.

Just get the calipers from your local autoparts store. For the cores just send back you stock calipers...Most place's will have no clue as to the difference. It's what I did after warping 3 sets of rotors in a year and I'm glad. It's been almost a yr since the swap and not a hint of warpage.

don't be totally relying on getting your core charge back, they won't take runner calipers for tundras, some guys that work at auto parts stores actually know what's going on, ask me how I know this

When I did the conversion, I specifically asked the NAPA counter person if it was OK to bring back the Tacoma calipers. He said "No problem", and it wasn't... The core charge was greater than the cost of the calipers...
Good luck - and this is a great mod IMO

If you are still "on the ropes" about what way to go, then consider this; I went to my toyota dealership and talked to a couple of the mechanics. I asked them about Tundra brakes and having to rebuild calipers. I explained what I was going to do, yeah, yeah, I got the first party line "this is not recommended" but then they gave me straight dope on the durability of the Tundra calipers. I asked specifically about rebuilding a set of 199mm calipers from 2001 Tundra. Both of the mechanics that I have had work on my truck told me in the 6 years that they had been at the dealership, they had NEVER had to rebuild a set of calipers. One even told me, "if it is not leaking or damaged, DON'T rebuild it".
The Tundra I got mine off of had about 60,000 miles on it when I pulled them off in a wrecking yard.
I got the rotors and calipers for $50 plus tax. I had the rotors turned at a Napa store for $28,
The pads were still fairly new so all I did was "recondition" them with 120 grit sand paper. Toyota mechanic told me how to do it, all you do is on a flat surface push the pads across the sand paper a few times evenly removing the glaze on the pads and they will be fine.
The only problem I ran into was the dust shields. I had to file a small amount from the inset so they did not rub with the Tundra rotors installed.
I know I had done a write up on this mod when I did my install but I can not find it (yes I did a search) as I remember getting feedback on it from other members about seating my pads. So it may be there, I just can't find it. I do have picures of the install on photobucket and if you need any help with how to do this I will be happy to assist if you need it. I have had mine installed now for about a year and never an issue, never a problem since I installed them. You can save some money or if you are concerned about serivce life, then do what gives you sound sleep at night. I checked and investigated and I have a very solid set of front brakes on my truck for less then $80 along with the satisfaction of a job well done.
Doing the brakes on the front of your 4runner is alot simplier then I imagined. This was the first time I had ever done brakes on any vehicle, so it is really a simple job if you can turn a wrench and have any mechnical ability, you can do this. Also I have OEM Toyota parts!

i thought i read that you needed 17" wheels to clear the 231mm calipers or either trim the caliper or notch the inside of the wheel if using 16" wheels. from what my foggy memory can recall when doing my research a couple years ago. that's why i chose the 199mm calipers and kept my 16" wheels. hopefully some one with a crystal clear memory (or link) will confirm or elaborate more on this for you.

well you guys just made my day. Ive been doing so much research and i was yet to see some one do it with the 5 spoke. it was all the older 16 in wheels and those needed to be ground down a little.

What year Tundra had the 231mm rotor/caliper combo.? Also, will these fit under my wheels? I have 16" 5 spoke wheels, but the spokes are more rounded than the spokes above.
