Fitting a 1st Gen roll bar in a 3rd Gen
So to y'all that've done it or been involved with it, how much do you cut off of the front legs? I asked Steve at Sonoran Steel and he couldn't remember off hand so I'm asking here. I'm going to drive two hours to do this and would like to have as much finished before I arrive as possible so any help is appreciated. Any write ups on this yet?
Thanks
Jason

i'm working on mine now too! i screwed up on the first one and accidentally cut the back legs, doh! found another bar cheap last week. i took the old bar and did some measuring and cutting and some more measuring, a couple test fittings (which is a pain in the butt, especially working alone), and i came out with one side cut down by 2 3/4" and the other at just shy of 2". i'm not sure of exactly which side i cut down to what right now, but after mounting the back i see that i might have taken a little too much off the driver's side, just by about an 1/8" and i haven't angled the tube for the feet yet either. although, with the rear legs mounted, there is some give to the roll bar and it seems to spring up and down some. so, when i take it to get welded, i'll get it where i want it and bend it ever so slightly down by that 1/8" or so and tack it into place. even with all that measuring and fitting i was still off, i guess i won't be doing any precision fabricating of my own anytime soon
Rock Slide, your detailed post helped a lot and was an inspiration. the only difference i'm going to make is, the local powder coater wants over $200 for the roll bar so i'm going to sand it down and paint it with some POR15, my new friend
good luck Terminator!

I had this done in January, and it was a PITA. Luckily, with no welding skills (or access to a welder), I found a local guy that did it for $50/hr (only took 20 mins)
We couldn't fit the bar in with the front two feet on, so after we took 2" off the front feet, we wedged the bar into place, test fit the bar, and concluded that we'd better weld it while it was in the truck. Good idea, but if I had to do it again, i'd take the carpet out (burned it a little near the front feet). Maybe if I could do it all over again, I'd take all the interior pieces out, so it would just fit in without scratching anything. We wedged it in through the rear doors like Rock Slide said in the thread.
Patty: what are you going to sand with? 200? 400? My bar still needs a coat of black, so when it gets warm enough, I'll attempt it.

yeah, i think i'll make sure that whomever does the welding has a stockpile of those welding blankets to put down before shooting sparks all over my interior
