Firing up 01 Runner after 5 years of sitting
Hello all,
About 3 months ago I bought a 01 4Runner that was in a rollover accident from a friend ($800) so I could do an engine swap. When he purchased it the truck ran strong and could limp along well enough that he drove it on and off a trailer.
I'd like to get it running again so I can find out if it runs well enough to attempt a swap to my 95 or if it might need to have something more extensive done to it before then.
I know I'll have to drain the fuel but I'm not sure where to start and I'm only home on weekends (which are mostly spend doing wedding planning). Can anyone offer some advice on what needs to be done to get this running again and what order things should be done in?

I purchased a rollover that sat for 4-5 years and installed in my 95 4runner. No idea if it would run. It ended up running great. The injectors weren't even plugged up. You'll want to drain the fuel, like you said, make sure there's some oil in there. Just get it hitting on all cylinders briefly before worrying about changing coolant and oil change IMO. If it ran getting onto the trailer, I'll bet you are in good shape.

It's not too bad to drop the tank on 3rd gen with the release pins. Alternately, you could disconnect the fuel line before the fuel filter (you'll want to replace this anyway with this e10 gas we're using now) and jumper the under hood diagnostic port pins (FP and +B, I think- please confirm before doing this) and manually turn on the fuel pump to drain the tank. You'll still have a little in the fuel rail but that's alright, it'll burn on through.
