Exhaust Questions for My 04 3.4 Tacoma
I've heard that the best way to go is 2.25 inch tubing for the exhaust, but I was figuring with that factory rating (overshot) of 190 hp, and the 3.4 L that 2.5 inch might be better. I've seen a lot of info on here about guys running the 2.5 inch tubes. You guys just running that after the muffler? Or after the cat? Or are you guys just welding right after the headers and collector and going 2.5 inch from there? If I'm mostly looking for sound (QUALITY, NOT QUANITY of sound) then how much difference are we talking about here to just do cat back, or do the whole thing? and is that difference worth voiding that warranty that goes away if I touch anything in front of the cat?? Thanks Guys!!
LETS SAY FOR NOW I WOULD LIKE A LITTLE POWER GAIN, BUT AM MOSTLY LOOKING FOR SOUND IMPROVEMENT....WHAT SHOULD I DO TO THIS EXHAUST? FROM THE STOCK CAT BACK. (Gotta Keep The Warranty) THANKS!!!

i have 2.5 on my 96 3.4 tacoma that i made myself from mandrel bends and a magnaflow straight through 5x14" oval i believe. mild steel.
i only made it because my last muffler had a hoge hole in it and wouldnt pass inspection, but im happy with it.
it starts after the stock cat, using the stock (smaller) flange. which ill be cutting apart at the end of summer when i have time and installing a 2.5" carsound cat i have and appropriate flanges. possible a header at that time too if i can find one i like.
soulds good, not too much different than stock, and i didnt "feel" any difference.
stock on mine was about 2.35"

You should be fine to run 2.5" but limit it to that and no more. Your stock system comes with 2.25". It'll be cheaper to stay 2.25" though. The sound is mostly derived from the muffler... you don't need to alter the tubing and/or cat to get a nice tone. If a better tone is all you are searching for then just replace the muffler. Running 2.5" tubing will give you very little hp gains(probably not any noticeable). The tone will not really be a noticeable difference in sound in the 2.5" tubing over the 2.25" tubing.
Hope this helps.

looks like thats the ticket. Any preference? I've seen a lot of guys leaning toward the magnaflows while I've been searching around the forum. but then again everyone has to love flowmasters. I had flows on my old 03 S10, and I loved them. What do you guys think?

Check out Corey's Exhaust Page it's a little out dated now, but still has a lot of sound clips of different mufflers on 3.4's.

I have the flowmaster on my truck and it sounds good at low RPMs but kinda sounds like a ricer at high RPMs IMO. Doing the deckplate mod and cutting my exhaust pipe after the cat did make it a little louder which is cool with me.
