yup sludge galor
i openned up the drivers side and it was much worse
you can actually make golf ball size sludge balls from what i've seen in there-i think this motor is done for.
i'm chucking the long block and keeping all engine controls/emissions equipement and swapping them over on the JDM motor i ordered.
i found a jdm one at a really good price from a guy in florida w/ a 30 day warranty and guaranteed to me sludge free.
not letting this 4runner die-i'm giving it a new lease on life
i'll take pics of the swap as i'll be doing all the work myself as i've been there done that during my mitsubishi days....
here's whats coming next week:

Jesus she must not have EVER changed her oil for it to be that bad... It looks like a paving machine in there
You can probably part out some stuff on that engine though, like the intake, alternator, etc. etc.

i've had luck w/ jdm motors when i use to race mitsubishis(track only) so,i went that route.
private sellers on craigslist want the same amount too as salvage yards in my area w/ the same mileage and no warranty
so jdm i went

QUICK QUESTION
is there add'l hidden headbolts on the 5vz motor? i took all head bolts off-8 bolts per side(12mm;12pt) and exhaust manifolds studs and for the life of me,can't lift the heads off-so much sludge in there i'm probably missing something.
seems like its getting hung up at the rear...
thanks again...

Also can't you use the long block for a core exchange?

Each head has a single extra bolt, its a long socket head cap screw that uses a 6mm hex I think. The passeneger side is at the back of the head near the firewall in a pretty deep counterbored hole. The drivers side is at the front of the head it the symmetrically same spot.
Edit: I attached two pictures that show the holes in the block they screw into, and the approximate location on the passenger side head.

You can actually see the hole for the screw in this picture. Why it's there I dunno, maybe to help seal the head near the coolant passage right there (although it has a low torque spec), or perhaps to foil the attempts of DIY mechanics like us.

good thing about the JDM purchase, you get to keep your old motor-if space is available,i'll keep the block and toss out the heads.
i do have another 4runner-a 96 that had the strawberry milkshake issue i bought couple weeks ago, prev owner sold it at another real bargain...maybe use the block for it as it has 340k miles and it might be anytime soon
i got that running thanks to this forum-no evidence of damage to the tranny/engine.
paypal u a $20?

Nah that's alright, glad to help a fellow Yotatecher. How about you just post pics of the bottom end of that engine for me

If i were you "Engine Sludge Guy", i would clean up what i could with the valve covers off, get your buckets moving again (ATF and Acetone 50/50 mix), put said valve covers back on and run a quart of tranny fluid with every 1000 mile oil change. Never know--it might just keep going--
HOWEVER Guys--i have been in a few of these motors and never seen or even heard of this--people must be trying to get 100K out of a single oil change HHHAaaaaa
And just to show you something else about these motors--i did 10K oil changes with Mobile 1 and when i got the motor rebuilt for more power--the builder said everything was in spec (165k on the motor) --didnt even have to touch the crank besides balancing it.
