Engine identification?
Does anyone here have any cheep and dirty tricks for visually differentiating the various incarnations of 2xrxx blocks? ( I can't seem to find the dang tape measure anywhere to measure bore or deck height )
I picked up what is supposed to be a 20r from a fellow 'techer yesterday, but on closer inspection I'm thinking it may be a 22r instead. One of the belt driven accessories (smog pump I think) seems to be located differently, and of different design, and there appears to be an external coolant passage/tube on the intake side that my current engine (20r) does not have. (though it's hard to be sure as I'm not able to get a clear view under there right now)
I have, however, eliminated the late model (85-95) 22r block thanks to this: However I have yet to find any similar identifying photos out on the web for the early 22r, or the 20r that would assist in this identification.
Any ideas?

there's a little flat spot below the first freeze plug there that should say 20R or 22R or 18R or whatever you have. are the manifolds off the engine? 20Rs and early 22Rs('81-84) had round exhaust ports. 20R has round intake ports and the manifold has 4 individual runners, 22R has square intake ports and 2 main runners.
4wd trucks, 2wd trucks, and celicas often had different arrangements of cooling and accessories! kind of a pain in the butt if you swap a celica engine into a 4x4 like i did.

Head is of the 20r variety and is off the engine (a 22r/20r conversion gone wrong and never finished). I'm mainly concerned with the block at this point, as I'm trying to source parts for the rebuild, and I need to know what I'm looking at.
Trying your little flat spot did the trick (after cleaning off some gunk). It is indeed a 20r block.....but what origionally got me wondering is that the dipstick is on the opposite side of the engine as the one in my truck.
The one in the truck now had the dipstick on the intake side, whereas the block I have here has it on the exhaust side.

"early" 20R blocks had the dipstick on the passenger side. i think it was like this until '78.5. i don't have evidence to back it up, but that's when the head was outfitted with power steering and fuel pump mounts(though '80 was the only year that the 20R actually used a mechanical fuel pump). wierdly, the early heads had the side PS mount holes, but the front one isn't there. i've got an early 20R(siezed and rusted out) and a late one(pulled from my truck a month ago, but not in too great of condition)

I have a 1983 toyota truck that originally had a 22R in it, when i bought the truck it had a 20R in it, i am wondering, how do u find out what year the motor is? is there a site where u can enter the motor serial number?
