Emergency Brake Cable

Emergency Brake Cable
92 4 runner. The emergency brake cable broke near connection to the hand lever. I'm having trouble removing the broken piece of the cable from the lever and thus installing the new cable. The tube in which the lever slides has a slot, but I can't quite twist the inside rod enough to remove the cable. Has anyone done this before and know if there is a trick manouvre?
Thanks as always.

hey gary!
reach up under the dash where the handle passes through, on top there are two small palls that you have to press to release the cable. once you release those palls, it should come apart quite easily. there are a couple of bendy tabs near the top of the bellhousing that hold the cable up and away from it, youll need a long handle screw driver to gently pry them open to get the old cable out, then once you have the new cable ready to re-route use it to gently tap them back into place. make sure the engine is cold when you do this job. while you are at it, check the other connections for the p brake and lube them up or replace as needed.

Thanks so much
It took a bit to figure out that you had to push the lever forward ...
Tough enough job even when you know what you are doing
So now with my newly developed contortioning skills I'm off to join the circus
