ok so assuming a lockrite is an example of ratcheting, which would be an example of a LSD? because judging by your explaination it seems if i do not want to spring for the selectable arb or e-locker, the LSD would be the best way to go for a DD.

also do you know what the difference is in the detroit, and the detroit true trac?

The truetrac is an LSD (and the only one I know of that's made for our diffs), the normal Detroit is a ratcheting (aka lunch box) locker. The truetrac will not perform quite as well off road as a lunch box, but will still be a big improvement over an open diff and have much better on road handling. It sounds like that would be a good choice for you unless you plan on doing more and more wheeling in the future.

You can run the 5.29's open, its just preferable to put the locker in when you regear since you already have the diff out and open. If you can't afford it then wait, lunchbox lockers aren't hard to install yourself.

i know its a little late, but i just wanted to update everyone on what i ended up doing. i regeared to 5.29 and i used the detroit true trac LSD. the truck drives great and way better gas milage and towing ability. i dont feel like im beating the piss out of it anymore. off road traction has also greatly improved.thanks again for the help and info!

What size tires are you running and do you have an auto tranny or manual?

I like the choice of the LSD. As mentioned, they're good but not ideal off-road, but on a daily driver in the northern climes they kick-butt in the snow.....
