Frank with the regular fan the engine has to work ALL the time to turn it. Even when the clutch on it is disengaged it is still robbing power from your engine to turn the pulley. Also if your hardcore and like to do deep water crossings if your fan is turning all the time it will sling water all over your precious engine compartment i.e. electrics, intake, ect. With the electric fan it works off a sensor and only comes on when the engine reaches a certain temperature and needs the extra cooling. Also most people wire them to a switch that wheel alot so they can turn them off for water crossings and such. I hope this clears up your question.

Another advanage of an e-fan is it takes a lot of stress off that fan bracket bearing that has a tendency to fail/explode and cause lots of collateral damage. The stock fan bracket bearing is also very expensive to replace.

Did they ever have a recall on them ? ?

At least on the older ones it did. Don't remember seeing a recall, maybe I missed it though. I had to replace the fan bracket on my 5VZFE but it was in a front end accident and the radiator was pushed into the fan. Tha bracket didn't break but it was making a bad bearing noise.
