I dont have one of those model 4runners to refrence for you, but I grew up with all kinds of toyotas and we now own an 04 4runner which is about as close as I can get. From all the toyotas we have owned, we have found nothing but quality made parts and clean construction.
My friend recently got an 02 xterra and it does well on and off road, but Its crappy construction. I think it will hold up for the most part, but you can jiggle the front grill about an inch in any direction, the rubber liners in the doors slide around and seem like they would just fall off at any moment, the sun roof in completely useless because theres a big basket right over top of it so you cant see out anyways.
My vote is for the Toyota, I'm sure the nissan would be a good vehicle, but why downgrade when you dont need to? I just think overall, the toyotas are built better, but those are just my thoughts.

4runner

i worked at a used car lot and drove many cars Xterras look cool but there acceleration is nothing compared to a 4runner, i would def go with a 4runner it would last longer and like others said be more comfortable

I always liked the look of the xterras, and I was stuck between the same choice when I bought my Runner. I was a real sucker for the hood scoop on the Runner, that, the fender flares, the interior was much nicer. I bought an SR5 4x4 which is not luxury by any means, but overall it seems to get the job done better. There was ore legroom in the back, and more space upfront. Dont know why but the Xterra seemed like a chick SUV to me. I would pick the Runner, and a sport edition if you can find it. Just my call though.
