I thought the long Christmas break would give me time to find and buy a cat back exhaust system for my '02 SR5. After searching though, the only ones I could find were in the $600-800 range...too rich for my blood. I'm planning on having a local muffler shop (Exhaust Pros) bend me a dual exhaust setup (catback) and have two questions.

First, what diameter pipe do I have them use? 2", 2.25" or 2.5"? Second, any thoughts on which muffler to use? Thanks for your help!

 

Flowmaster mufflers are nice, as to the diameter of pipe, the bigger the better is what I've always heard. Produces nicer sound and even less backpressure with a bigger pipe.

 

Actually bigger is not better. If the pipe is too big, the exhaust gasses expand and cool too quickly; making it harder to "push" the gasses out of the pipe. What you want is an ideal size and Toyota had this down for a relatively stock engine (2.25). Now, if you are going to go true-dual, you will want to size that carefully as well. Without having the chart in front of me, I believe 1.75 or 2" is ideal on a true-dual (with a 3.4L-equipped) engine. Don't quote me on that though.

 

How about the Jardine/Doug Throley cat back system? I just put this on my 01' and i am very happy with it. Especially the price. Right now they have it for 231.50 shipped. Cant beat that. http://www.autoanything.com/exhausts...A2788A0A0.aspx

 

i had the stock muffler replaced with a 18'' magnaflow muffler and had a 3'' tip put on sounds awesome and looks good to and cost me around $170 bucks altogether alot cheaper than $400-600 bucks for a catback

 

True! Bigger is not better. Also Duals might not help either. Where are you going to put 2 mufflers under your runner? A good muffler shop should advise you on size and duals.

 

The website says that the Jardine's are for the factory dual cat setup. Mine is the single cat system, so would it work? The price is really nice.

I'm going to run a single muffler with dual outputs. The muffler shop has now told me they'd suggest 2" tubing from the cat back if I get duals.

 

well you could buy a 2.25'' in and dual 2'' out and figure out where to put the spare.... i also i have sound clips if you click my mods in my sig there on pg 2

 

The Doug Thorley / Jardine will fit a single cat 4R. Just search "Jardine" here on YT and you will get quite a few threads. Most folks running the Jardine/DT exhaust are single cat. I am not sure why AA lists the 2002 as dual...

 

Im in Cali. so i have the dual cats. Question is, Do the models with dual cats come back further than the models with a single cat? Is there just more piping on the single cat setup? Hmmmm. You could always just order it and if it dosent fit, you could take it to your exhaust shop and have them lenghten it to fit. Even if you had to do that, your total cost in the end would probably be around 300 bucks. Not bad.

 

Very true xonetruthcrewx. Right now, I'm trying to decide between a side exit dual setup, where the tip exits in the same area as the stocker or where the tips exit out the back by the hitch. I like the look of the side exits too.

 

the jardine is a rear exit. i like it much better than the side exit. IMO the single rear exit is money.

 

Usually when their are dual cats, the second one is closer to the engine. They want it to get hot quickly so it can start cleaning quickley.

 

There is a difference between dual cats and our trucks with 2 cats. A dual cat vehicle has as 2 seperate exhaust streams, one for the bank 1 and one for bank 2 with as many as 4 cats and 4 O2 sensors. On our trucks with 2 cats there is still only one exhaust stream but the one stream runs through 2 cats.

 

How do you like the exhaust system? Can you compare it to any other systems, I'm looking for something just a little louder than stock. Also it says 2.5", did you lose any power? 2.5" is ideal for a S/C setup but how is it without one? Thanks for all the help.

From what I gather, the O.D. is 2.5", not the I.D. Regardless, the thread-starter seems to really like the system. $231 with free shipping is a pretty darn good price...

 

Just looked at the Doug Thorley system on their site. According to them, it's a side exit in the stock location. Does look pretty good though! I'm wondering if the pipe is too large; most have said to stick with 2.25" or smaller.

FWIW, they've raised the price to $250 ish shipped.
