Drop in 22R - Changes?

My 87 4Runner does not run and I have been having a hard time looking for a 22RE to drop in. Its more of the price that is making it hard. I think instead I will get a 22R for now out of an 85 pickup i found for $500. The engine has 185k on it and apparently runs strong.

Oops- So now I know not that much about carburated engines. What should I look for, goods and bads, that will make this swap worth it.

Also my biggest question is what does the engine swap from a 22RE to a 22R consist of, what changes must be made? This information would be great and get my truck on the road way faster and easier. Thanks

i take it you already have a 22RE in there right, that doesn't run? if you find a late 22R you can just bolt on the intake manifold for the EFI and you'd be set

Really? That would be so sick, but I thought a 22R had rounded pistons and a few different changes such as a heat stove inside the cyl. head for the header? Would it have to be the entire cylinder head or just the Intake manifold with the throttle body? What about computer, and electrical changes, any there? Thanks man I am pumped now.

as far as I know the head and block of the 22r series engines are all the same for 85 and up.

all '85 and newer 22R and 22RE long blocks are compatible. '84 and older were the ones with the shorter heads and domed pistons
