ditching the AFM on 3.0L

I know many BMW tunners have had great luck getting power at all areas of engine rpm by removing the restrictive AFM. has anybody adapted a MAF or alpha-N type setup on AFM equiped toyota's?

also what engine management is the 3.0L? bosch, seimens.
thanks
Eric

For the cost and complexity of setting up a MAF on a 3.0, you might as well do a 3.4L swap. Switching to a MAF in and of itself doesn't do anything for performance, you have to DO something with the (potential) extra air, and I just don't think the 3.0 NEEDS that much extra air. I will poke around a little more (I did a little searching but lost intrest a while ago) and see how the AFM is set up and whether it could be adapted or perhaps simply switched out for a larger AFM if it's really *that* small.

LC Engineering sells a kit like you want for the 22-RE. It gets rid of the AFM http://www.lcengineering.com/ProFuelInjection2.htm and is tunable. It looks like the 22-RE and the 3.0 use the same AFM. I always thought the 3.0 AFM was very small and restrictive. It is the smallest diameter of the intake system.

That's just a stand alone engine management system that uses a MAF (I guess?) instead of an AFM. I think SDS might actually use a speed density calculator for the fuel delivery, but honestly those systems are very complex and it would probably cost you $1500 to install and tune it even if you did it yourself and spent very, very little time on the dyno (which means it probably won't be tuned 100%), at that point you've already dumped more into the 3.0 than it's worth, it's not like you'd be getting 50hp from the system. An AFM swap would only make sense if it A) caused HUGE gains (probably wouldn't without tons of other mods) or B) was cheap enough that it would be worth it just for the slight increase throughout the RPM band, which it's not. Sorry, I'm still casting my vote for the sidedrafts.

Yea, I remember that system being very pricey. And you would still have the 3.0. The 3.4 swap is a much better option which I will eventually do.

Wink

There is link on LC Engineering's web site. The company is called TCR, they have a motor control that might be what you are looking for.
