Directions to replace an air/fuel sensor

I think Skrillah's description is entirely adequate, but if you want more info:

The only hard part is forking over the $ for a new sensor.

Not sure on that. I have a 2001 4WD 4Runner with the 3.4 that I bought new in Texas. I was at the dealer last week and priced out the sensor. From my serial number they told me I have an A/F sensor not an O2 sensor. The cost was much higher and like I said this was not a Calif vehicle.

My 0-1 Tacoma is not a Calif. addition and it has a A/F sensor. It checks the Air /Fuel flow ratio and most all Tacoma's have them. I could be wrong but that's my understanding. Don't know why it would have anything to do with Calif restrictions.
Anyway, It's between the cat and the engine and it has 2 nuts on it. You will also need to order a new gasket as most of them do not come with the gasket and they don't bother to tell you that. You may have to spray the nuts with something like rust blaster a few times to get them loose. You will also need a small screw driver to undo the disconnects to the wires.
When you replace it do yourself a favor and put some never seize on the new nuts and on the studs before you replace it. It will save you allot of head aches down the road. It's also a good idea to spray the electric contacts with some kind of cleaner and sealer while your at it.They book says it should be replaced every 70,000 miles. Hope this helps, Mike
