But this is the site I used to install my rear diff and I don't recall any tape, but I don't think it makes a big difference since the fitting screws in there pretty far and doesn't have tape on it when it comes out.

I don't use tape. It's air tight without it. Have you ever seen the mess that teflon tape leaves in the threads when you take something apart? If you ever have to remove the breather, all those fragments are going to be in the diff

Teflon tape can cause leaks in some threads you lock down. Toyota didn't use any and it really isn't necessary for that location.
I don't think it matters if teflon tape got into the diff since teflon is itself a lubricant.
