CV's Shot ?
Hey Guys (and Yota Gals too)
I haven't been wheeling in about 4 weeks now, and decided to go play last night.
I get to the local run and drop the Runner into 4Wheel drive. I'm driving along for about 5 mins when a tight turn comes up, I crank the wheel and hear a loud "Click Click Click" when I get back on the gas .... Oh Crap
I get the noise only in 4Wheel Drive and only with the steering cranked either far right or left. 4x4 works fine.
What do you think it is ?... CV's
Is there a way to tell if they are shot when I remove them ?
I have a tear in both boots that I haven't fixed yet so could it maybe be just lack of grease ? Or rust buildup in there ?
Can you rebuild CV or do you have to buy new ones ? There like $180 bucks CDN a pop
Sorry so many questions... I'm really not looking forward to having to drop allot of cash to replace them. I was hoping to put that money towards a Roger Brown 3" Body Lift
Oh BTW I've removed the skid plate to see it that was the problem... But no

Most people will tell you that once they click, they are shot. I think rebuild kits exist, but I personally would not do that. I would just get reman'd or OEM - costly, but that would be easier IMO.
Another idea...
Why don't you pick up some used OEM CV's that have never had a boot problem (if you can tell) then put new boots on them and plug and play. That would be the cheapest route I believe, while still maintaining durability. Maybe a junk yard would have them?

CV and maybe axel
I had the same problem recently. Hard right turns, click, click, click. My boot had been torn for a while, but my mechanic advised me to wait till the axel needed replacing. They replaced the axel and cv's, $365 US, bummer. I priced them and OEM stuff's never cheap. I think my shop got the reman'd for a lot less than I could have found them. The problem was my out CV was shot, probably the same goes for you.
After the fact I heard (have no idea where to get them) about some sort of replacable boots, that kind of "snap" on so you don't have to pull the axel. You might want to investigate that further for the other side that isn't broken yet. Good luck man. PS. I dig you rig.

Hehehe
I'm the guy the mentioned the Split Boots. There are 2 types "Click" together and "glue" together. DONT USE the glue together if you 4Wheel.. seems like MUD eats away at the glue...
Hence the reason I have a big hole in my Boots, and hence the "clicking Im getting now"

Actually I heard about them before I'd found this forum, however still don't have a clue where to get them or who makes em. Mine are fine now, but I would be interested where I could get my hands on some of them fancy click kind?

My suggestion, if you've got time and not much cash, is to pull them out, clean them REALLY well, to get any dirt/crap out, regrease, and throw them back in. Worse case you're out time and money for grease. However, it might buy you a few months or more.

I had both my inner boots open for a few months, just had them replaced the other day at the dealership.
Here were my options:
If the joints were damaged, I could either...
A) Get a cheapo boot kit and axles for $550CDN.
B) Get OEM axles and OEM boot kit for $1200CDN.
I lucked out and the joints weren't damaged, so I did the option I was hoping I would get which was an OEM boot kit for $516CDN installed.

All those prices sound like a heckava lotta $krilla! (unless that was labor TOO!) I went to O'reily's yesterday (to get Seafoam and zipties) and was quoted $85 plus a $100 core charge on a CV halfshaft for my 4runner! Why even bother rebuilding - just r & r the halfshaft at that price! Plus...they have a lifetime warranty on them.

In the US you can get non-oem CVs for about $80 each with a lifetime warranty.
I've seen people selling used CVs from pirate, 4x4wire, or here for anywhere from $25 each to $40 each. CV boot kits from toyota run about $25-$35.
