CV Axle Help!

CV Axle Help!
Hey All,
I am in the middle of replacing the CV axles on my 2001 tacoma. The driver's side is done. Took a while, but that side appears to be good to go. I then popped out the CV axle on the passenger side and prepared to install the replacement just like the first one. However, it looks like interior of the differential is different then on the driver's side. It looks like there is a splined interior piece missing, and without it there is no groove for the C-clip to pop into. No additional pieces came out other then the axle and dust cap. Any ideas?
The smooth, shiny part of the diffential in the picture just before the splines had a rotating, splined piece on the driver's side. ??????
Thanks!

Mine, and I know it's good....4Runner though....
With new seal, but still good....
And what's behind that seal....if it's not leaking/messed up don't mess with it!

You're good to go. What's different is supposed to be that way. You just have to understand how the 4WD ADD system works to know what you're looking at. Which you apparently do not...

Great, thanks for posting the photo! I guess I am confused on where the C-clip ends up when the axle is back in place, if there is no recessed spot for it like there was on the driver's side. I broke the C-clip in three pieces on my first attempt to pop the axle in.

Yep, it's popped right in every time I've done either side.

Thanks. Nope, I don't know what I am looking at. First time replacing these. I figured if the axles are identical and interchangeable then their mounting in the differential would be indentical too.

Everybody's gotta start somewhere, least that's what I keep telling myself! Watch that seal when you put the new shaft in, don't knock into it. That's one of my DOH moments. Ah well, I'd rather fix my mistakes than let someone else have all the fun.

stinky coon, Hab modified post #5. It does not appear she is meaning that she broke the clip, but the the cv axle slid in and the c-clip popped into place locking the CV axle in its installed position.

Thanks RW, that's where I was going with that....bad about not quoting what I'm answering. Don't worry Stinky, you had a fighter on your hands, your life or its. You've still got fingers, toes and a face so you can consider it a win.

as crazy as it seams, ive have seen factory screw ups where the have put one option on one side and another on the other side not that this applies to you but wanted to add my 2 cents. you could have one of those. i did a ford that took 2 diff brake pads (side to side)on the front do to 2 diff options available that year.thankfully they are a regular customer and understand so we can just do what

Dude, this isn't a post count contest. If you have nothing relevant to add, except an extremely half-assed guess(and a completely wrong one at that), then your "help" is far from needed here.
IOW, you can keep that 2¢...thanks anyways.

at one piont its seems that there was a comparison between one side to the other and i just wanted to mention that it is possible to have miss matched parts from side to side due to a factory error.i was not making a guess at any thing, just a true statement, nor did i say that it was the problem. its relevence can be determined by the person looking for information. i was not offering you help, you certainly dont seem to need it here, you are definately smart enuff, as your post reflects, to take the time and bring all this to my attention as any hero should. i apologize for stepping on your toes but i thought all and any input was welcome here. if you disagree with my post you cuold simply say you dont think it applies with out all the sarcasm. thanks for my two cents back as well as my post count.
