custom roof rail and rack ideas..

iv bin thinking bout getting 3 .75 or 1 inch tubes bent into rails for the roof with no basket. running passenger to driver side.
im thinking bout a 4 inch base at the ends of each bar, with 4 bolts and rubber spacers inside and outside of the truck for the base.. i plan on putting the spare, hi lift, and maybe 100lbs worth of backpacking packs and the like on top...

any info or ideas on custom racks.. it justs seems so much cheaper than buying pre fab..

I'd like to see some good close-up pics of custom racks. This is a good idea. Has anyone built a custom rack and just used the roof as the bottom instead of putting a bottom in it?

I've got access to a welder and could just get some tubing bent at a muffler shop so this may be feasible to me.

Thanks

yeah.. maybe adding some rails to the roof to keep the paint nice.. and add stregth..
(rails so you could slide things forward and back easily. or rubber rails so it wont slide so easy)

I don't have any answers, but I'm curious to see what would work... I like the idea.

I'm too lazy to do a search for you, but someone on this board had made a custom one and they had posted pics too. It looked fairly good and seemed to be very strong too.

Just curious Michael. What did you use to seal the top of the supports to keep it from leaking? Any tips?

Did you just drill through and then sandwich the plates?
I'm liking that idea. Got some ideas about a fold-out camping platform up there...my girl HATES sleeping on the ground. Kinda like the Princess and the pea...she could feel a rock under any amount of layers of ANY material. And the tigers can't get her, up there.
