For all of you that have removed the starter on a 3rd gen V6 auto 4WD 4runner, the write ups are excellent but knowing exactly how to orient the starter to remove it under the passenger side fender well can be challenging.

I just did mine and it was like a game of freakin tetris

Anyhoo, picked up contacts for $22 and starter is back in and working like a champ.

Here is the pic and note several things.

1. Bracket holding brake line is normally on the INSIDE of the frame rail. Remove bolt holding this bracket and the one on the outside of the fame rail closer to the flexy hose.

2. Lift bracket up and move to above frame rail...if you leave it where it is, it snags the starter.

3. Compared to its installed position, the starter is now back to front and upside down. Note location of switch contact.

This will save you a LOT of fidling as trust me, I turned the starter every which way until I got it out so took this pic so I knew how to re-install.

From leaving Yota stealer with parts to back on the road was around 45 mins today so it went back in really quick

Can I ask where you got the contacts at? I'm pretty sure my contacts have went bad at nearly 150k, and I was wanting to order them before picking up a wrench!

I got mine at the stealer. You have to take the starter or at least the solenoid with you as there are 4 different contact types used and VIN makes no difference.

Roger at 4crawler identifies them and sells them at his site...
