The cost of converting to 4WD?
Over the years I have been at a great disadvantage; that being that my 1996 Toyota 2.7 L, 4 cylinder, 4Runner is automatic and 2WD! I have invested enough effort, time, and financial assets into my truck that I am not willingly to trade or purchase a used or new 4WD vehicle. My next option, or even project, is to study and research the means for me to convert my 2WD to 4WD.
The question here to all yotatech members is: How much do you believe this type of conversion will cost? What materials and parts will I need, and where shall I begin to look?
Advice from experienced members who have actually converted their 4Runners would be great and maybe even a list of parts specifically pertaining to my vehicle specifications!

you know what you should do... take the 4 cyl out, put it on a dune buggy or something. do the 4x4 stuff with the engine out. get it all installed and good. then drop a chevy 350 under the hood. get an allison 4x4 tranny, and you're all set. if its a carburated 350, get a holley 850 performance carburator. thing will FLY in either 2wd or 4wd. .

Im not sure how offroad you want it to be, but if you were going to go through all the effort and money, wouldnt the extra stretch towards a solid axle be an option? anyone else think its smart?

yeah for real your literally changing out the whole drivetrain in your 4runner. would that be easier then buying a newer 4wd v6 4runner and putting all your "time and effort" into something actually deserving. please post some pics i still wanna see this thing

The whole point of doing a 4wd conversion instead of selling/buying a new one is that the rig you have is your rig. If you've had the vehicle for a long time, you grow somewhat attached to it and would rather modify it than sell/ get a new one, regardless of the extra cost. The guy asked about how much it was gonna cost to do the conversion, not for anyone's opinion of what they think he should do. He already said he wasn't willing to sell his to buy a 4wd, so stop suggesting it.
And if you'd rather have a Kia than a Yota, you truly are an idiot .... I mean come on, it is a yota board you're on
