considering a LSD for my runner
Ive been wanting to get a selectable locker for a long time but the price has kept me away from them and I think they are a little bit over kill for my needs. And I dont want to have full time locked rear because I live in Montana ,I drive on icy roads all the time , and most of my wheeling I do is in the snow so now Im considering a LSD . but I dont really now very much about them so If you guys could enlighten me I would appreciate it much . also this is for a 85 toyota 4runner w/ 33s . also what is the going price for one now and who sells them ? Ive seen a couple for around 400 bux . thanx

i think the best bet for a LSD would be a detroit truetrac. i wouldn't know first hand, but there are quite a few people out there with them
also, i've heard talk of some guys using a supra stock lsd, it would fit our trucks because a supra uses an IRS version of our 8" rear end. if i remember right, the supra LSD might actually be superior to a truetrac, and cheap if you get it from a junkyard. i believe a truetrac will run around 300-400$

There are a lot of threads about LSDs, lockers, how they work, what's the difference, etc. here. I'd recommend running a search for "lsd locker". You'll find enough info to keep you reading for an hour.

Yeah I agree about the search, but one thing you'll want to know if you drive a lot on snow and ice is that a lsd is going to be harder, yet more fun, to drive in those conditions, because the back end will slide all over the place. Fun, yes! Safe, not always!

i had a lsd in my 90 yota truck. it was quite fun except in the rain and snow-- you slide all over the place, but it works very well in slippery conditions if your trying to go ( stopping is the big problem ) I got mine rebuilt and installed for about 450. I recommend going to a specialty differential shop--that way there will be no questions about having it installed and set correctly.

ice/snow? I would say go with the selectable arb or even the toyota electric. but I think the toyota one will run you more since mods and new parts are required.
You want to have completely open diffs running in the snow and ice unless your very sure you'll be going slow enough and never lose traction since if one wheel loses the traction you may start to spin.
I almost went with the truetrac LS in the front but I changed my mind and spent the extra money on the arb. I think you'd be happier with the selectable since with the LS you would be able to tell it's there on the pavement but with the selectable, it's either on or off and no change in regular driving will be experienced.

In snow and ice, a good lsd and an engaged locker will act almost identically.

I used to have a True-Trac in the rear. Some times when I started too quickly in the snow or kept on the gas around a corner, the unit would engage and it would get squirrely. Same thing if I started too quickly.
Auto-lockers are not good in snow and ice.
Manual lockers are great in snow and ice, you can choose what you want.
LSD's are less annoying than auto lockers in snow and ice, but not an open diff if you need one.
I now run dual ARB's.

I installed my compressor tonight and it works great. can't wait to wake up tomorrow to start tearing the rear out and putting in the new one...

I will be installing the True Track in the rear of my 97 very soon. I am putting down way to much power and I keep spinning the inside tire when I am driving down country roads. Imagine it, moving along at 40 MPH and tip into the throttle and while going around a curve and then the blue smoke comes out from the rear of the truck from tire spin. It gets anoying.
If it works out well, which I am sure it will, I will then install one on my Ford pickup.
From everything I have heard from people that are running the True Track on the roads it works really well with no real bad manners.
For serious off roading, the ARB is the best thing going right now. Detroit is making a version of the True Track for other applications that is a LSD all the time until you flip a switch and then it becomes a full locker like the ARB. Now that will be the hot ticket if they ever make it for the Toyotas.
