I have tried fiberglass, stainless whip, and the ultra-cool K40 superflex. IMO, the K40 wins hands down.

The fiberglass/spring combo sort of reminds me of a nun with a yard stick... WHACK, WHACK!! IMO, ridgid fiberglass antennas are perfect for highway rigs, because they don't flex much, but I don't think they are really intended to be used with a spring. I imagine you added the spring because it is hitting stuff when you go off-roading. I think the solution would be to go with a different antenna for off-road use (like the K40 super flex). I have mine mounted on the hood, and it does just fine on the highway, but flexes for anything off-road.

Yeah, I think that's the solution I'm going with. Mines low enough that it should flex enough when I hit a garage or something.

The spring is really to protect the mounting surface, so that the spring flexes before anything snaps off. The actual antenna is very strong and I'd imagine it would take a great deal to break one. If you're mounting it to something stiff like an ARB or TJM, the spring is not necessary.
