cold start sputtering

cold start sputtering

hey guys, I think I posted about this a while back, but I have some more info now..

when my truck sits for a couple hours or over night, when starting cold it'll sputter/cough if I give it a sudden rev. doesn't do it if I real slowly give it gas though, and a mile or so of driving warms it up enough so it doesn't do it.

my mechanic told me it could be the coolant temperature sensor?
what you guys think of this? and I'm not sure which sensor is the coolant temperature but I think its behind the intake plenum?
if anybody has a pic of this sensor or could describe it that'd be great

same proplem here. Also makes it harder to get goin in first. Anybody know what this is from? Im going to replace the fuel filter next week to see if that could be causing ig (well i wanted to do that anway, and it cant hurt) other than that though i just dont know. Anybody else having this prob?

The fuel filter is definately worth a try. Might also be your TPS (throttle position sensor).

here's a list of what I've replaced so far that hasn't helped the cold start issue: Spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, fuel filter, cleaned throttle body, cleaned cold start injector, lotsa cans of fuel cleaner, had the timing belt, water pump and thermostat replaced.

Took the CSI out to check it today, and it smelled like gas but didn't seem really wet.. the truck had been sitting for 24 hours or so.

any suggestions welcome

geez, anybody?!

just wanted to know if there's a possibility it could be the coolant temperature sensor?

or the 02 sensor? the truck runs great once it's warm, just that first mile it takes it to warm up...

course when I had a diagnostic done on it the other week, he had it warmed up and everything checked out fine, that's when he said he might need to test it cold to see if it was the coolant sensor

I did almost the exact things, changing all that stuff.
My problem was, sorry to say, a blown head gasket. (typical cylinder #6)
My tell-tale sign was coolant loss and a gel build up on the oil filler cap.
Truck ran great after it warmed and the compression in all the cylinders was fine. $1500 dollar bummer.
I used so much injector cleaner all of the plugs were powdered white except #6, it was clean as a whistle.

man that's terrible, I sure hope that's not the case with my engine.. sometimes I have to add a tiny bit of coolant, but never saw any sign of it in the oil.

although it's been doing this cold start problem since I got it, and I've put 25k on it so far... hopefully just a bad CSI, as I'm not sure it should smell like gas and feel a bit wet after sitting over night

Cold Start issue.

I was told it is the cold start injection timing switch. They have an upgraded one i understand that solves the problem. I havent put one on my 86 yet though same problem. I know this is how you feel. LOL

my truck acts like this, but it's when it gets wet. for example, after muddin through watery mud puddles. (like in my picture, the day that picture was taken was the first day my truck started acting like this). if i hit the gas hard, it'll sputter. if i give it gas nice and easy it's fine. then after a mile or so of driving it goes away. i'm thinking water is getting in the distributor but you'd think if water got in there the engine would die. anyway, i'm taking it into my mechanic on wednesday to get my steering box rebuilt, might as well have him take a look at all these other problems i'm having. good luck to ya!

i had a similar problem recently on my 2.7, after i just finished redoing the whole exhaust/header, couple weeks later it started to sputter really bad even when it was warm, i put performance spark plugs and wires in and upgraded the fuel mixture and the problems gone. if its a bad 02 sensor thatll throw off your air fuel ratio more likely giving you a richer mixture but i highly doubt thats causing the sputtering

Probably your cold start injector. I ran some cleaner in my gas and mine stoped doing that!

I had problems with my coolent temperature sensor on my last vehicle (chevy)and it would keep stalling out with very low idle but ran great when I gave it gas. I changed my sensor and gave the cooling system a flush and no problem any more. I,m not sure if this is your problem and i don,t even know if our 3.0l was one.
