Cold start engine stalling

Hello all, Finally joined YotaTech and I've got a question regarding my 2000 4runner V6 SR5 5spd.

When I try to start my car in the morning (or after it's been parked for a few hours and it's colder out), the engine will kick over, catch, then die. If I give it gas as it catches and rev it up, it will still die. Then, after the 3rd or 4th attempt, it catches and revs all the way up to 2000rpm for a few minutes before dropping down to normal idle. I should mention I'm in San Diego so it's not crazy cold or anything.

Anyone with a similar year have the same problem? I also have the cold air intake setup (K&N) and just recently washed and lubed up the filter. I was getting ready to replace all my spark plugs and do a basic tune up, but wanted to put the question out there and see if I could get some help.

Thanks in advance!

You may need to clean the airflow sensor, K&N filters are known to cause problems for this sensor. Clean it with electric contact cleaner.

Another thing to check would be the fuel pressure regulator for leaks.

Agreed... seems like the common factor
