have you had someone press the pedal while you check to make sure the slave is moving like it should, and see if its holding. when my master weent it would release pressure.

And thanks for the response! I'll take all the ideas I can get, like I said I'm stumped and I have replaced a lot of clutches, but never came across an issue quite like this
I was never able to handle a clutch problem properly, I always end up taking out everything. Any idea on some good clutches?

Hey coug, yeah I checked the slave and it engages fully and holds pressure as it should. I wish this was the culprit ha I'm tired of this issue!

Turtles, welcome to YT! I personally will only put Aisin brand clutch disks and pressure plates in my rigs, along with nachi bearings. You can find those products on wabfab for a good deal. Never ordered from them personally, but know a lot of people who have and say they ship fast www.wabfab.org/

ok so if running and in gear with clutch down it idles fine and not grabbing?? just trying to figure this out. if so then it could be sincros. not sure what else it could be if the clutch is engaging and disengaging.

Yeah it idles fine in that case, it just sucks to get into the initial gear from a stop. For example, I'll be at a stop, won't go into any gear, then randomly it shifts like butter

I can feel a thud when it's being stubborn trying to get it into gear, which furthers my assumption that the clutch doesn't disengage barely. Like I said, I went over everything lol I think its the pressure plate, I don't know what else it could be

Haha yeah I feel like banging my head against the wall too, oh well 130k on the stock clutch without knowing how the PO drove it isn't too bad I suppose, and I did sort of put to the test more than once

Really, on the newer toyotas? That seems pretty low, I have done a handful of clutch jobs on the 95.5-02 range tacomas and 4runners, most seem to go right around 150k, but that's just from what I've seen.

Cougar, nope I have this thing still staring at me and my wallet

I'm really putting my money on the pressure plate, it seems definitely clutch related.

Wish I had a good update lol I won't be able to tear into it for a few weeks

Hey guys, a little update. Sorry it took so long, as stated before my 4Runner is sucking up my funds, so I couldn't get to the clutch until a few days ago.

New Release bearing (NSK)

New Flywheel, clutch disk (AISIN Disc)

New Release bearing (KOYO)

THIS WAS THE PROBLEM!!! New pressure plate (AISIN)

How does it shift? Like butter now! All of the old components were extremely rusted. The PO must have done some water crossing, and all of the moly lube was gone. The front bearing retainer shaft had to be sanded due to rust and corrosion, which wasn't helping the release bearing to slide on it.

My clutch pedal feels great now! It always was very very stiff, but I got the truck at 100k so I never thought much of it. 30k and a new clutch later, it drives like a dream! New synthetic mobil GL-5 75w-90 in the tranny and transfer, I couldn't be happier! Off to buy a beach pass now!

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

Been a while since this thread was last updated as Pismo was able to correct the problem.
I have just ran into a similar problem and was wondering if you think it’s the same issue. While engine is off, can shift into any gear without any problems. While running its damn near impossible from a standstill and requires me to turn the runner off to get it into 1st. When moving, I have a very small window where I get it into gear while downshifting so that I don't have to keep turning the vehicle off at the lights. One difference with mine is that it seems the clutch doesn't want to disengage when the pedal is all the way down. I can hold onto it but if I let the brake off at rest, it will slowly creep forward with the pedal still down. 1st to second sometimes grinds a little if it’s not perfect but otherwise the other gears don't.
Last but not least, Clutch is very strong. Had it, and the pressure plate replaced 35,000 km ago.
Any insight into whether this is the pressure plate would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,

Hmmm that's low miles on your PP setup, have you checked the brake fluid level in the clutch master? Try bleeding it and refilling it to see if it helps. Then again, if you bought napa parts, maybe the PP is already toast.
