Clutch

Ok. When my truck is running I can push the clutch in and it will rev up a little and when I let it out it will lug down a little. What Causes that? Also can a clutch problem make it hard to shift into gear? Thanks

that sounds pretty normal when you push in the clutch it will disingage the tranny giving the moter less drag and the rpms will increase and vise versa. your talking just a couple houndred rpms right? yes a bad clutch will make it hard to shift have you tried adjusting the peddle height and how many miles are on your truck?

Transmission is not spinning, hence cold oil is not dragging the engine down.

Yes a clutch problem can cause hard shifting.

I dont have a tach so it is somewhere around 100. 198,500 miles figured its about time for a clutch or rebuild or something.

The pedal does seem to have more freeplay than it sould have. For my adjustment I think I need to lenghthen the rod so to speak. Right?

198000 miles you should be on the trucks 2nd clutch maybe third. but in general they tend to slip befor they go out (not always but usually) attached to the clutch peddle theres a cotter pin and a 12 mm nut if you remove the cotterpin and pull that assembly out turn the nut a couple times (lengthing the that distance to theslave cylinder) will give you a little more life to the clutch when its getting down there. Just replaces an original clutch in an 89 p/u with 186,000 miles and my dad babies his truck. i have 161 on my 90 runner and i'm guessing it already had one put in but i ont takel it till it starts slipping tomorrow i'll take a picture off the assembly and post it But that should solve the shifting isssue. Going up hill if you punch it and the clutch doesnt start spinning faster then your acceleration you should be ok. just addjust the peddle

I bought my 99 4Runner used with 127000 on the clock. The clutch was crappy so I replaced it, disc, pressure plate, throwout brg., pilot brg.

Much better now.

If yours has 198000 on the clock, it's due for a clutch. Around $325.00 for the kit.

i replaced mine @147k, but the clutch had a ways to go, the throw-out bearing was going, so i changed everything. if it's not slipping, you may not need to change it. it's all in how you drive. is your tranny gear oil clean?

I have no idea what clutch it is on. I will have had the truck for 2 years in february. I'll try the adjustment tomorrow. My dads got a 87 nissan 2wd I4 and I think it is still on its original clutch, 240,000 miles and still pullin strong. Judging by the uphill trick it doesnt sound like the clutch is bad. Thanks

Okay, do it right!

First, bleed the clutch hydraulics. Then, and only then, adjust the clutch. It should engage/disengage near the top of the pedal stroke. There should be 1/2" - 3/4" of free play at the top of the pedal stroke after bleeding. If it engages when the pedal is just off the floor, it's likely that you have a hydraulic system full of air, a bad clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder or a mechanical clutch problem.

If the clutch engages/disengages when the pedal is just off the floor, it's likely that it's not completely disengaging. This puts an enormous strain on the tranny synchros, and will very quickly wear them out, as well as making your shifts hard to do.

Good luck.

Ok thanks I'll try it next saturday. I replaced the fluid around a month ago. I used a vacuum pump and it never seemed that i could get a solid stream out more like a solid stream of bubles. I had the hose pointed down after the elbow and I think if i point the hose up it will keep the hose sealed better. Or I could just do it the old fashioned way, probably the better way to do it.

Hey thanks for yalls help. I done the adjustment this weekend in the cold brrrr. Should've done it a few weeks ago. Any ways it shifts great. Upshifts are alot better and the down shifts are moderatly better. Thanks to all that helped.
