Cleaning body panels
Too cold out today (must wait for a chinook and some warmer weather to do this) to do my cleaning job. i'll use it as an opportunity to ask a question. What is the best way to get the inner fenders clean from off-road use? My recently aquired '96 4Runner has a fair amount of old mud between inner and outer fender on the front, as well as stuff packed up on the fender lips above the wheel flares. Driver's side looks easy to do with a nice big hole to wash into behind battery. Not sure where to blast on other side unless I remove all the air box and its fender connection. Where will the water drain out? I don't want to just blast the mud to a tiny little hole which will plug up and transfer my problem somewhere else. I don't have my shop manual yet to get a good idea of body drain locations. Wheel flares on front will be removed (looks like they are attached with bolts/screws) but not too sure about back (looks riveted) so that I can clean properly and inspect for signs of corrosion. I don't mind off road use, but it's irritating to me when the mud doesn't get cleaned up completely from the chassis. You can get some wicked rust problems from this sort of thing. I should know. My full size GM truck suffered that sort of fate from having fiberglass wheel flares that where never cleaned above and behind. Dirt just sat there above fender lip and rotted the steel away. Had to buy a new box for the truck. Another good spot to clean is the sunroof drains. Lots of people never do this and then their sunroof rots later in the life of the vehicle. Just something to think about.....
