So I've had a CEL on for months now. There are times when it's not on, but invariably it reappears. I took my '99 SR5 3.4 into the dealership today to do a bunch of routine maintenance and to have that CEL checked out.

They called me a little while ago to say that the MAF sensor was bad. I asked him if it was something they could just clean, but he said it was bad and needed to be replaced, for $345.

Offsetting this unfortunate news was the fact that since there's no cabin air filter they won't be charging me $80 to change that, and with direct ignition I won't need to buy a distributor cap and rotor...so there's another $50 I won't need to spend.

Still, $345 sucks.

Yota Nubie,
Well another one bites the dust! It was last week when they got me for the same thing. I had mine on for a while too... I went there n for a lot of stuff and i plan on a long drive soon... I know it was the O2 sensor, So they changed it and that... The only thing i regret is not having them replace the waterpump while they under there... when i come back from FLA i might have them do it maybe late summer...maybe if the service advisor's wernt so damn good looking i might have told them no... but i think i'd regret it after being stuck on I95 between here and there..I'd swear they do it on purpose... Mine did the same thing your did on- off for a while...then i had it done. here the labor is better than $100 an hour So it does add up.... MAF SENSOR huh? i'll have to see what this is..

maf is teh first thing with wires going to it after the air filter

they are fragile ! but they get dirty, and the ECU depends on it's readings.

cleaning them usually works great

Which is why I asked them if it was something they could just clean, but they said "no".

Edzo,
I'm such a schmuck!Mass air flow sensor!! i'm not too bright these days... Now that you tell me where is it i know what you are talking about.. I just installed a K&N FIPK last weekend.. I was handling the maf and did not know what it was!I'm glad you told me how fragile it was.. I know it's got electrical connections on it so i knew better to bang it around... I was also wondering how much that Gizmo was anyhow.... thanks for telling me..
Sorry that could not clean it... it does look like something thatCOULD be cleaned....
Thanks again.
