Check engine light

I have a 99 taco with the 3.4L and a S/C. I keep getting a check engine light, and my mechanic says that it is running lean. He reset it once and now it is back on. At first he said it was probably bad gas, maybe a little water, I have been running midgrade due to gas prices. Now he says it might be the bypass valve in the S/C, or my O2 sensor, or something else. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else, and if so what did you do to fix it, I don't really feel like getting the S/C fixed or worse, get rid of it. So any help would be appreciated.

You should get the fuel upgrade kit from URD.

First, get the code and post that.

Second, ditto on the above advice for the URD fuel upgrades. Countless stories of issues with running a S/C with no upgrades and pinging or CELs become a way of life until the motor decides to fight back (in a few cases). Up to you, but if you don't have them, you are definately playing with fire. Just ask Midiwall (Mark).....I'm sure he'll chime in.

X3 on the URD fuel kit....and start running the high octane before you ruin the engine, if you haven't already.

If you really can't afford the premium gas remove the SC and sell it.

The supercharger has been on since 1k miles, and now has 111k. I was considering taking it off and getting it rebuilt. If any of you have done that, who would i contact and how much? In the mean while I have the original intake. I have already considered the urd kit, but 1k$ is a little to throw down at one time. I was just going to plan to run w/o the S/C till I can get the urd fuel kit. Would running the S/C all that time then going back to stock be bad on the engine? Just wondering, thanks for all the feedback

It is possible damage has been done already.....or maybe not....hard to say until a failure occurs.

Read what Midiwall wrote on the subject in here when I asked about an EGT probe:

Not that I can think of, unless you drop a bolt or something into the intake while it's off. If you're worried about what's bad for the engine you can't get much worst than running a SC without fuel mods and low octane gas. Unless you happen to be at high elevation or don't use the boost much you have probably trashed that motor.

I've been running high octane, 91, but just recently have been using 89, and I live in West Virginia, So the elev. isn't that high. I have had no problems yet until just recently. I think it might be a dirty MAF, but I was planning on takin the SC off anyhow, Until I get the fuel mods.

Clean the injectors. And not by running a can of stuf fin the tank. The S/C demands extra fuel, I suspect you have a P0171 code. But try cleaning the MAF sensor using Toyota brake cleaner, first especially if you have a air filter that requires oiling.

I suspect the lean comment your mechanic made may refer to a P0171 code as MDT alluded to, but without knowing for sure, it is all just speculation at this point. Post the code when you get it.

Well like I said I thought it might be the MAF because I am a surveyor and last week I was frame deep in a mudhole, not the best place to survey. Also, I didn't get the code the last time because my mechanic is shady, he does work for cheap as long as it isn't anything hard. I think he didn't tell me my dad who brought it in last because he wants as much work out of me as possible, but like I said I wil post the number monday. Thank for the feedback

It was a po171 code. After cleaning the MAF what else might it be?
