Yep...That's right...Use the CB antenna as a Stereo Antenna as well. I was looking at a FireStik Splitter. Opinions on the mounting it on the back cargo door of the suburban?? Probably not as good as the fender...

I vote for other also, cuz I went with the firestik 4'

Mounted on my front fender

I agree with bajataco somewhat about the fiberglass antenna, except I mounted mine with a spring just like how jackson did, and it held up fine, even under really low trees and brush.

I have the Radio Shack #21-988 All Terrain antenna. It is a 66" long base loaded whip. I have it mounted in a coil spring and with a folding knuckle in a luggage clamp mount centered on the rear of my BVG basket. Works great, and I have the VSWR at 1:3 on channels 1, 20, and 40. It is $18.99 at Radio Shack, and sure beats the hell out of the trees out on the trail!

I realize this is an old thread, but is there anything wrong with mounting it next to the tailgate and above the taillight on a pickup?

Wilson products are nice. Wilson firetick or "little wil". Or a brand called "K40"

Busted my K40 this weekend, the core snapped right at the base. It did take a ton of abuse, and a spring probably could have saved it. I ran it without a spring on the advice of the shop where I bought it.

There is nothing that even comes close to a whip period but if you don't want something that high go with a Wilson 5000.

I have tried K-40, Firestick, Wilson and a few others and the Wilson was by far the best. It had a big mag-mount and the whip was a bit smaller in dia., so it didn't swing back and forth as much. I also used the K-40 and Wilson on the 10 meter ham band and the Wilson was much better.

It looks like the "something else catagory" is winning.
Personally Ive never been impressed with any of Firesticks products and Ive tried them all.

Good alternatives,if you insist on a fiberglass antenna would be a Wilson or Francis.
Wilson makes a little known antenna called a "Silver load".
Both the Francis or the Wilson Silver load will out perform anything Firestick has to offer.
All of these type antennas are a narrow banded antennas, meaning if you intend on talking on SSB or 10 metres you might want to pick up something else thats more broad banded.
If you arent afraid to go with something other than a fiberglass setup try a Predator 10k.Its broadbanded, tunes easily, very lightweight for an aluminum antenna, superior construction and I havent found an antenna to beat it including the 108" whip.
